Domestic Violence Nursing?

Published

Hi!

I'm currently attending school to receive my associate's in nursing. When I get a job, I want to help domestic violence victims and survivors, and preferably just them. But I don't know what kind of facility I should apply to? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unless you could find a job as an RN at a women's shelter or some kind of domestic violence assistance agency (and that seems unlikely to me), I don't see you having much of a chance getting a job working exclusively with domestic violence victims/survivors.

Only way maybe you can do that is if you apply for a case manager position (which is non nursing) that would accept your nursing degree.

If a shelter is large enough, they might have an RN to help with intakes. But any client that has true nursing needs will not be appropriate for a community shetler. She will be in a hospital. Also, this kind of screening job would be hard to come by, would not be appropriate for a new grad, and would require a BSN. ER nurses work extensively with this population, as do forensic nurses (EG "rape kit.")

There really is no such animal as a "domestic violence nurse". You can go into forensics nursing. You can be an ER nurse. You can be SANE certified. After 2-5 years of experience you could be a case manager. But there really isn't such a thing as a domestic violence nurse.

Perhaps Social Work is more your calling?

Sadly, you will find this in ALL areas of practice. It is that prevalent.

Good luck.
