Does pdn count in the "real" nursing world?

Specialties Private Duty

So the quotations are because I honestly feel like many of the situations we encounter require skills that facility nursing staff couldn't dream about.

Main question: why is it that whenever I read posts or comments on acute care blogs etc do I see many people mentioning that homecare doesn't count? I manage some pretty chronically acute little ones. Serious stuff. And this doesn't count?! Im an ASN RN a few semesters shy of my BSN. Im ready to transition to a hospital or facility but always feel self conscious when I apply because I've only done homecare.

Ideas/input?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Time management is practiced daily in my PDN cases.

Specializes in Peds/outpatient FP,derm,allergy/private duty.

I would first ask what they mean by that. Does it mean "count as nursing experience" or does it mean the old tiresome "not a real nurse" BS insecure people like to bandy about specialties other than theirs?

Maybe back in the day when you could stroll into any facility and say, "I'd like to work here, please" it would matter. Working LTC was supposedly the kiss of career death, too. What with inpatient beds downsizing and the trend toward outpatient, community health and management of chronic diseases that old bit of conventional wisdom is outdated. I would say home health and private duty fall under those categories. You could tell them the IOM report says they are on the road to obsolescence, not you!
