Does Obamacare 2014 allow only BSRN to sit for NCLEX-RN?

Does Obamacare 2014 allow only BSRN degrees to sit for NCLEX-RN? Not diploma or associate degree RN? A student I talked to yesterday said that SNAP (Student Nurses' Association of PA) was saying that is true for Pennsylvania, at the most recent convention.

Is anyone else hearing similar warnings or rumors?

Are you serious? When does a healthcare plan have anything to do with someone sitting for the nclex? Go to your state board of nursing and get some facts.

What she told me (and she's her school's SNAP rep) is that in 2014, it's BSRN only in PA. And I said "HUH???!" Obamacare was the only thing I could think of that would precipitate that change, because much of PA is rural and thus still hires ADRN and LPN because they don't have BSRNs or BSRN schools in certain areas.

eta: And those diploma and ADRN RNs who are already licensed will be grandfathered in and will still be RNs, without a baccaulaureate degree.

Obamacare is going to effect nurses with ADNs and diplomas by banning them from working in hospital settings. Those who have an ADN or diploma will be grandfathered into the system. But I don't know if that will kick them out if they try to change jobs or not. This is going to encourage those with ADNs and diplomas to go back and achieve higher education. I personally think it is a good idea because you need the critical thinking skills to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. But some of the best nurses I know only have an ADN. We will see what happens. Hope this helps.

This post is completely inaccurate. No nurses are banned from working anywhere in the United States based on their level of educational attainment, and no legislation has recently been passed to make BSN degrees the minimum entry level for nurses.

North Dakota was the first state to enact laws that made the BSN degree the minimum entry level degree for RNs. This law went into effect back in 1987 and was repealed in 2003 because so many nurses fled North Dakota.

As far as I know, Obamacare is not driving the push for BSN as the entry degree level for nurses. It may be that in some way it makes having this degree more helpful, but that's just conjecture.

Let's use those critical thinking skills, shall we?

If you want to independently verify this person's statements:

1. Find the (federal?) legislation titled, "Obamacare 2014" >.

2. Read it ... or at least some summary.

3. Find clause directing individual state legislatures to pass laws amending their individual state nurse practice acts regarding educational preparation required for RN licensure.

4. Go to PA BON website. Look for evidence that the PA legislature has passed such a law, to be implemented in 2014.

We know there's a drive for having the BSN be the entry degree level for RNs. What I think we would like to see is something indicating that Obamacare, or indeed, any federal agency is implementing law to bring it about.

Just a side note, but I am so sick of seeing the term "Obamacare." It is derogatory. I believe it's called the Affordable Care Act??
