Does NCLEX expires?

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone kindly educate me about NCLEX I checked the website but there is no info about the license if its lifetime or not. Suppose you pass the NCLEX as well as any english exam and still you opt to work here in the Philippines, will the license expire or is it renewable and how? What I only know is that you have to work in the US or the State where you applied for eligibility within 2 years, am I right?

hi mtmjnov,

As far as i kow NCLEX is only taken once, once you pass it you become a Registered Nurse of the state for which you chose to write the exams for (pending any other requirements that state may have for licensure e.g. SSN). The RN license has expiration dates too (just like here in RP) but is renewable, again requirements depend on which state you are licensed with. On your last question, nope you dont have to necessarily work in the state where you applied for eligibility or written the exam. Once you passed NCLEX you can have it endorsed to other states that has reciprocity with that state.

Hope that helps :icon_hug:

No state has reciprocity with another state. Only the NCLEX has reciprocity. You need to apply for endorsement to any other states.

Yes, it does expire, 2 years after. They expire on your birth month. They are renewable, fee depends on the state you are licensed. They also require Continuing education units (20 ceu in TX) You don't need to give them the certificates, just hold on to it because they might do a random check...

I don't know about needing to work within 2 years after acquiring your license...

Licenses do need renewing and they have an expiration date. Most require that you have a certain number of CEUs to renew, and some even require that you submit the SSN# to them before they will renew your license.

Just something to consider.

NCLEX-RN is an exam, it never expires. It is not a license, it is only part of the licensing process. State licenses expire, or need renewal every two to four years, depending on the state.

Once you take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam, you never need to retake it. If your application expired, because you are over the three year limit with CA for supplying a SSN#, you need to resubmit an application, but the exam results do not expire.

The results are good for life.

as you've said for example i've passed the nclex, and i did not go to the us for the next 3 or 5 years.is it ok? but how can i process the license that you are saying,? tnx

Your application for licensure can expire if you are unable to provide a SSN# to the state. But the exam itself does not expire, providing that you have had the results forwarded on to another state before the time limit in the letter.

There are already several threads here on what needs to be done.

Closing this thread now since there is newer information that is now available.
