Does it matter which state you take NCLEX?

Published

Hi all!

I'm in my last semester in Wisconsin and planning on moving to Colorado.

Does it matter if I take the NCLEX in Wisconsin or Colorado, as long as I apply for my license to the Colorado State Board of Nursing?

Also, I plan on moving pretty quickly, any insight as to how quickly you were able to apply for and take the NCLEX???

Thanks!

Nope! It doesn't matter what state/testing center - you just have to get approval for the BON you are applying to.

Wait I believe it does matter with some states. Confirm with the BON

No, it does not matter. It's all through Pearsonvue Testing Centers.

The NCLEX is nationally standardized (has been for some time) -- you apply for licensure in the state you want to practice in, and then you can take the NCLEX in whatever physical/geographic location is most convenient for you.

I don't think it matters where u take your test but it matters which state your applying to, for instance a friend of mine (in NJ) wanted to apply for a NY license, but the clinical house weren't the same (NY required more) and she already paid NY of course she didn't get her money back and still had to apply to Nj

As long as you send in your application to the BON of the state you're applying to, you're fine. I have a couple of classmates who took their NCLEX in different states. I will be taking my NCLEX in a state other than the one I applied to this week :)
