Does it matter where your degree came from?

Published

i've been accepted to csudh and noticed on their website that they have an "accrediation" link on their site that reads, "the school of nursing programs are accredited by the commission on collegiate nursing education (ccne), the board of registered nursing (brn), and the western association of schools and colleges (wasc)."

i know someone who is working on their master's degree who currently sits on the brn and the school they're attending reads, "west haven university is licensed as a degree granting institution in california and offer degree programs in nursing and other disciplines."

is there a major difference? does it matter to a hiring manager?

It matters BIG Time. Undergraduate Nursing schools must be accredited by an approved by their state boards, a national professional agency (NLN or CCNE) and the appropriate NATIONAL agency.. in the case of Ca, it is the WASC. Graduates of non-accredited schools are not eligible to take NCLEX.

Nursing Graduate programs also need state, professional and national accreditation - otherwise the degrees are not recognized as legitimate and would not be eligible for APN status/board certification.

Ah yes, I understand the accreditation required to sit for the NCLEX! Thank you!

So in order to hold an APN status or board certification, then the degree would require some accreditation, such as, "Degree Granting Institution" ? As mentioned above, for example, in the case of West Haven University.

I'm asking because I currently hold an ASN and I have the time right now to go for a BSN (plan to further my education to MSN) and some online curriculums work better for my schedule than others...BUT...I find myself questioning the credibility of other institutions and how much weight my degree will hold in the future. AND! After reading this article about APNs moving on to hold Doctoral degrees by 2015. It's all overwhelming!

Hiring managers for the majority of positions are interested in an unencumbered nursing license and previous experience working as a nurse. If other qualifications are required, that information will be disclosed in the original job posting.

If you complete a degree from CSUDH you will have no worries. :)

Many of my instructors at my community college ADN nursing program received their degree from CSUDH both Bachelor's and Masters. And when you are hired on at the community college level they are very picky about where you degree comes from. The instructors told me so and they are on the hiring board.

This is incorrect. My nursing program is not accredited by the NLN or the CCNE yet and our graduates have taken the NCLEX RN and are working. Some of them are also in BSN programs. The only approval neccesary is from the state.
