Does LPN is really dying ? All places only hiring RNs ?

Published

Please tell me if that is truth . Some said that most places are hiring medical assistant and not LPN just because the paying ? That in couple of years only RN will be getting a job! I want to become a LPN not a RN . Should I change my career option ?

At both companies I've worked for in the last 5 years in L.A., LPNs were non-existent. Hospitals and companies get much higher reimbursements for RN and BSN, and can pay MAs minimum wage if they want.

LVNs are hired for some areas,(ie LTC, private duty, senior daycare) in higher numbers than RNs.

Natalie, the best advice I can give is that you need to factor in your personal characteristics with respect to where you want to work ultimately, how much debt you can take on and how long your finances can withstand the time out of the workforce (full-time anyway) as a student. If at all possible it's best to go for your RN right away, with a BSN. That will give you the maximum amount of flexibility should you want to focus your career in a specialty area or nurse management and leadership.

It is true that we are experiencing an unprecedented number of new graduates in nursing at this time, which will probably accelerate a trend towards not hiring LPNs in acute care hospitals and specialties like pediatrics, NICU, Labor and Delivery and critical care units.

One of the positives that still remains in this field is that it is possible to bridge to the next level without having to quit your paying job as an LPN and many people have done that.

As suggested above approach every decision with as much research into the job market as you can, and should you start an LPN program keep your fingers on the pulse of your desired work location and environment so you won't waste too much time chasing down false leads.

Hope that helps a little!

When I was in LPN school everyone was saying that too... but I followed through. I see more LPN jobs then ever! Everyone said that Maine hospital s dont hire LPNs but every hospital in maine I hiring for at least one right now. Both of the jobs I have works were hiring for a RN. One, charge nurse of a LTC unit about 30 pts. Second job, case manager for home care.. only hiring for RN. follow your dreams! Do NOT back out. And fyi not only have I seen many jobs in maine NH and Mass too. Good luck!!!

AND I have seen more and more LPNs in hospitals when I work with the PCP office's. Its crazy the growth in LPNs

Hey Natalie!......I truly understand your frustration, but LPN's are not being phased out. However, we are being hand picked for certains positions. It is up to you to sale yourself on your interviews. I graduated Practical Nursing School in December 2006, I worked full time for a Homehealth agency, three Nursing Homes and PRN for a well known Rehab hospital located here in Atlanta. I juggled myself around until September 2009 until I finally:) landed a great position at Davita Dialysis. My manager later told me that she was impressed with the way I interviewed.

I thought long and hard whether to go the CMA route or the LVN route. Ultimately, I realized that CMA would end at CMA, but with LVN, I could advance to ADN or BSN.
