Does Kaiser (in or near Sacramento, CA)hire ADN nurses?

Published

Hello,

I am an aspiring nurse that is currently working on fulfilling their nursing pre-requisites. I am trying to figure out what type of RN to go for: my ADN or my BSN. I'm leaning more towards my ADN and eventually getting my BSN. The nearest hospital is Kaiser South and I was just wondering if they even hire nurses that have their ADN. If so, do they offer tuition assistance for those that are going for their BSN?

This is just me brainstorming for right now. I'm not even in a program, but I do like to have a plan. I hear different things about getting an ADN and how they are being phased out. I also hear that there are places that won't even hire you if you have one. I'm wondering how true it is, especially in my area.

Another place that I would like to consider is Shriner's Hospital, but yeah...I'm just thinking about it at this time.

Thanks for your input.

Speaking as someone working in California...the BSN is strongly preferred by most hospitals. The main reason I got hired as a ADN was because I had both prior experience out-of-state and specialty certification.

Both the hospitals I work for rarely hire new-grad ADNs. The ones that do get hired are usually internal candidates.

Here in my city in California, I've heard that ADNs are getting phased out over and over but haven't quite seen it. I graduated with an ADN and got hired along with about 4 other ADN RNs and got quite a few calls for interviews as a new grad with no previous experience. A manager from another hospital once told us that even though he's strongly encouraged to hire more BSNs he actually has ended up hiring far more ADNs. I guess it depends on each hospital and the person interviewing.

Just as an update to anyone reading this, I graduated with my ADN in May 2020. I am currently a RN working at a nearby hospital. I was able to get into a new grad RN residency program. So if you're  reading this, are in your pre-reqs and are thinking of your future, putting your "cart way before the horse", it's  possible to get a job in a hospital in Northern Ca, without prior healthcare experience, and with an ADN. It is hard, but it is possible.

Tuition assistance is also offered at my hospital, but after you have worked for a year. Other hospitals may offer assistance with a contract to work for them for 2 years.

Hi there! What new grad residency program did you get into? I'll be graduating in May 2021 with an ADN so I'm trying to research hospitals that will hire ADN new grads. I live in Sacramento but willing to apply all over California.

Lodi Memorial. They hire their CNA's and student nurses as RN's after passing the NCLEX for the most part, so look into it if you're interested and have the time to work while in your last semester. Good luck

Thanks so much for sharing that update! I'm huge believer in thinking way ahead so I'm so happy to hear things worked out so well for you!

Also, @scorpiodez, LVN I've been looking in the Sacramento area too! It's been pretty tough since I went to school out of state in Virginia (got my BSN in Dec 2020 and came back home to Sac) but here's some new grad opportunities I've come across so far!

Kaiser has a Norcal New Grad RN program that I just found out about the other day actually! It looks like they're accepting ADN, BSN, and MSN new grads. It has start dates for May '21 (apps open this March) and start dates for August/September '21 (apps open in May). https://nursescholars.kaiserpermanente.org/community/nurse-residency-program/

(also they have a Q&A webinar coming up this Monday and Tuesday 3/8 and 3/9)

And Also Adventist Health-Rideout Hospital in Marysville (North of Sacramento) had a bunch of New grad positions that were posted in February, so perhaps there may be more new grad opportunities in May as well!

UC Davis Health also has a Nurse Residency for the UC Davis Hospital located in Sacramento, but it looks like they only accept BSN and MSN new grads. In case you have any BSN friends though,  their start dates are August-October '21 and the application date is April 5th - April 12th '21. It looks like.
