Does where you get your MSN matter?

Published

Hello,

I am a nurse looking to get my MSN in administration/ leadership. My work offers tuition reimbursement ($5,250/yr) to 10 schools  and I am trying to decide if I shoud play more out of pocket for a bigger name school or go with the more cost effective school(both accredited brick and mortar state schools, not Ivy League) Does it matter where your MSN comes from or  is that irrelevant? should I go for the school that is cheaper?  In your experience does where you got your master’s degree make a difference? Thanks!

A BSN is still the gold standard for entry into leadership and management.  A Master's makes a difference in promotion for nursing leadership and nursing management positions.  With that said, I have not seen people promoted based upon pedigree in nursing (I.e. IVY league schools v. in state schools) for middle management or senior management positions.   Maybe it makes a difference at the executive level?  On the other hand, I am willing to  bet that even at the executive level, who you know and what you have proven you can do will matter more.  Just my thoughts.

Hey what rules are required to get tuition reimbursement? Like do you have to work a year for them? Are you allowed to leave after you graduate or do they make you stay a certain amount of time?

Every employer has different rules so the OP's answer is likely irrelevant.

My answer is not irrelevant. There’s a lot

more to my question. I have posted my original question here.

I didn't say your response was irrelevant, I was saying that any answer we could give you would be irrelevant because every hospital has different rules.

You were unclear in your first post what exactly your situation was, and why you were asking.

Any answer that anyone gives me regarding their hospital would not be irrelevant because that’s the whole point of me asking. I want to know what their rules are for tuition reimbursement since we all go to different hospitals so I want to see if the different hospitals all have different rules compared to my hospital.

Like I said - that wasn’t clear in your original question. It was more clear after you posted the link to your OP.

My original question was clear in asking what rules does a person’s hospital have in place when it comes to tuition reimbursement.

WHY you were asking was unclear. I understand now, thanks.

Like klone, I don't see the point of the question. The answer is yes, every facility has different rules. Unless you are doing a study of the various rules that exist, why does it matter to you what rules that a facility where you do not work has in place?
