Does being called a male nurse annoy you?

Published

I don't know why but being called a male nurse annoys me. You meet people, or people you know or whatever "so you are a male nurse" do you call females in law enforcement a "female cop" or "female firefighter"....

I'm a nurse, who is male. I am a professional, I am good at what I do. A nurse is a nurse just like a cop is a cop or a firefighter is a firefighter etc. regardless of their gender. I'm just saying.....

I have gotten used to the term of "Murse" which makes me smile. It is done in love, obviously, as I have respect of my peers and the families, so it does not bother.

In Belgium we dont have this problem, there is a male and female version of the word nurse in our language.

What are the words?

Never been called a "Male Nurse", but I get "Doctor" quite a bit. I tend to find that quite annoying.

I work in a fairly large clinic and out of our four hundred or so emplyees, I'm one of 3 Males.. (excluding Doctors)

I'm lucky on that count. I have only been called Doctor once. Of course, 1/4 - 1/3 of our ED is male, so clients get the hint.

Where I am from men and women have name, RN and if you have a BSN then it says BSN after. I am like the poster earlier said, a MURSE which is a joke amongst several of the male nurses at the hospital I work for. We all take it in stride because without a sense of humor you sink.

The time for getting annoyed has pass long time ago for me regarding this issue. However, it still strikes me funny when I hear colleague or a friend of mine introduce me to a new person as they add "he's a male nurse" my immediate thought is...as opposed to what?

a lepper, manwhore, male stripper, a mortician, etc... I think all of those get less strange looks than we do when we tell someone our profession! My parents flipped when I told them I was going to nursing school! They said WHY? I mean really, if I wanted to be a physician I WOULD HAVE. I am smart enough, I would just rather not pour 8 years of my life into school, ok thanks for asking!

Had a lady ask me the other day, "I know you are an RN and all, but, seriously, what are you?" asked her to clarify. "Well, you said you are a nruse, but I've never seen a guy work as a nurse. Aren't you offended to be called a nurse." We just need to have a professional discussion and education for the public!
