Does anyone have a story about an event that happened at the time of a pt's death ?

For instance ....you how it is never a good sign for a patient to see a relative, or call to their mother, or most certainly not to say ... I see the light !!! But you know I have had many patients that I know have seen and or heard someone or something just prior to death.

A lot of people talk about seeing dogs/ cats etc. I went to a seminar one time and the instructor was polling nurses about pt's that see a "black dog" prior to their death. I know I've had patients saying they saw animals but ever since then I've been very tuned in to the "black dog" theory.

Before I ever went to nursing school, my mom told me that usually people get better just before they die. I have seen this many, many times throughout the years. All of the stories here I can relate to.

My dad had asbestosis and COPD for years. He truly was an anerobe (lol in a loving way) anyway, he felt terrible most of the time and was cyanotic even with O2. He had to have a TURBT (transurethreal resection of bladder tumor). He went home, felt great, color was WAY improved, not using O2 and not using his neb machine as much. I went to work that night and cried to my best friend....dad looks better than he has in years, you know what that means! 1 month later he died. He waited until my brother was on his way home, I was on my way to the hospital and just my mom was with him and he just stopped breathing.

i too, see this quite frequently.

wounds heal, activity increases, appetite improves, ms sharper, edema resolves, etc.

these pts just suddenly rally, in my experience, 24-48 hrs before death.
