Does Anyone Else NEVER get downstaffed?

This thread made me realize how unusual my situation is. I work blood and marrow transplant. My unit is ALWAYS full. If we have an empty bed, it's only because it's being saved for a scheduled admission the next day. We NEVER get down staffed. We're staffed more or less at the minimum we need and if we have a call in are hustling for OT. On the rare, rare, rare occasion that we don't need everyone the most senior people grab up all the time off they can get (using accruals to still get paid). This last happened about 3 years ago. Is anyone else on a unit like this? What's your speciality?

Obviously the LD part means labor and delivery, but what's the RP?

Specializes in Oncology.
Specializes in Psychiatry.

Oh! I thought that it mean "Rest (in) Peace" while cancelled.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

I mostly work in Psychiatry in Miami. A huge portion of our clientele is admitted due to substance-abuse issues and consequent initiation of Maxine Baker Act (Involuntary committment) for complaints of hallucinations and suicidal-ideations.

Our census is highly predictable (including a lot of patients). It is fairly low during the first week of every month and through the roof for rest of the month. I'll let readers draw their own conclusions.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

And I bet it drops right before a holiday and peaks immediately afterwards :) Am there, doing that myself.

Specializes in Urgent Care NP, Emergency Nursing, Camp Nursing.

Emergency doesn't get called off where I am - the unit has to be staffed to handle capacity.
