Doctors Enter Their Own Orders??

Do the doctors at your hospital enter their own orders into the computer? We are soon to be using a new system where this is supposed to occur. We nurses wonder how it will work and how will we know when a new order has been entered. Especially a stat order??? :trout::trout::behindpc::behindpc:

Our docs enter their own orders with about 95% compliance. A popup comes on my screen when new orders are entered. Also the AP's (unit clerk's) flag new orders in the kardex book.

It is nice though when they also mention new orders to us.

I love CAPOE (computer assisted physician order entry). I can also take phone/verbal orders and enter them right in the computer. Very nice.

That's exactly how it is where I work. Fortunately for me, I work nights here and so very rarely have to worry about any new orders coming through the printer, unless it's a now order that I personally called and obtained from the doctor on call.

At the hospital where I work at the doctors are required to put their OWN orders in the computer. This way they can't come back and say that "I didn't order that". Because I work in a teaching hospital, we always have someone on call in the building to put orders in. I really don't know how that would work in a community hospital where you would be calling docs at home (on night shift). We don't know if something is stat unless the doc tells us or we check freq. This isn't usually a problem in the ICU here, we usually know when someone needs something stat. LOL

One hospital I worked at, the computer would give a small beep when a stat order was placed and the nurse or unit clerk would check to see what the order was.

yep- all of our ER doctors have to order everything into the computer: labs, xrays, meds, wound care, etc. we do not do it unless its in there. we all wear beepers that beep us when we have orders and we also watch the computer screens that will show us different symbols for different orders. I have to go into the screen and mark that I have done it and put it in my nursing notes also on the screen.
