Doctor and Nurse compatibility

Published

I am abouto go enter into nursing school about a year from now and I am trying to learn and gain as much information as possible. I was wondering, do nurses in general, RN'S or NP's ever have major conflicts with their doctors in charge? I am starting out to become an RN, and then hopefully oneday become a NP, that is my dream. I truley love helping people. I often thought about becoming a doctor, but I am more into patient one on one, and I am the type of person who wants to be able to make a difference in someones life. Just any input or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

First of all, doctors are NOT "in charge" of nurses.

Secondly, there are absolutely going to be interdisciplinary conflicts no matter which sector of healthcare (or any field) you work in. I'm sure there are conflicts between the drive-thru person and the fry cook at McDonald's too. I don't mean for this to be snarky, but you will run into conflict (potentially major) ANYWHERE.

The vast majority of physicians care about what nursing has to say and they appreciate your input in the care of our patients (ours as in the whole health care team's). After all, it is us that is with the patient 24/7, not them. You will, of course, encounter difficult personalities, but it is like that in every job. It can be a little worse encountering one of these types when someone's life depends on what is done, so you have to learn to deal with these types. I know when I had nurse residency, we had a class specifically dealing with communicating with doctors.
