I want to become a Nurse Practitioner, any advice?
Thank you all for your feedback. I really want this so bad and I am making sure I have good grades right now so I can get into NS. I thought about becoming an MD, but I am more into patient care than I am in "other aspects" of medicine. I know it is a long route. It is still early enough for me to decide which area I would like to specialize in, but I believe it is better that I start looking into specialties now than later on. I know money is a big issue sometimes, but overall I am either going to pick the be a FNP or ACNP.

I want to become an NP but which specialty?
I am still taking my prereq's for nursing school, but I have thought about my long term goals for nursing and I really want to become an NP, I was thinking either ACNP or CRNP or FNP. I know there is a gap of pay difference in between the two, any suggestions. Here is what I would like to do and maybe you can give me some insight. I am always picturing myself in the surgery room with the doc as he performs his procedures and being right there helping out, and also I picture myself taking care of critically ill patients. On the other hand I have a strong facination in pharmacology. The only problem with me is that I am not the best at math Now I know what each specialty basically is for, but I am also wanting more of a patient care based position as well. Down the road I would like to become and DNP, but that is a good way down the road from right now. Any advice on what I should do as far as education? Here are my plans right now and if you suggest otherwise feel free to do so. Right now I am getting my Associates in Nursing, then to BSN then to MSN then to DNP? What do you think I appeciate all feedback, and I am not trying to be nosey, just could someone let me know if you get paid salary or hourly? and an estimate on how much per year. I also want you to know I am not only into it for the money, but I want to make sure I choose the correct path that will truley make me happy. Thank you

I want to become a Nurse Practitioner, any advice?
Hello everyone, I wanted to get some information from nurses who are NP's or RN's that work with NP's. I have often thought about getting an MD, but I want be more patient oriented. I know NP's and RN's have a difficult duty on their jobs and it isnt easy. I am currently taking my prereq's for nursing school. Some people tell me go for MD, some say go for nursing. I also have a passion for the study of pharmacology as well. I know for the most part, RN's and NP's both have to study pharmacology. The thing is I really enjoy helping people, at the same time, I love being able to find what is wrong with patients and diagnose what may be the problem. So I guess what I am trying to ask is, being an NP, do you ever diagnose patients? I truley want to be a NP, I just want to make sure that I know what I am in store for. Some people are telling me while I am getting my prereq's out of the way, i should get a cna license and then when i am done with nursing school, I will become a RN, and then to BSN, then so on so forth. I just have so many questions i dont even know where to start. Some enlightenment would be appreciated. Thank you I know the money is nice, but my overall reason for doing this is because I want to make a difference in someone's life.

What was your inspiration to become a nurse?
The interesting thing is, God is my inspiration as well. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about finally becoming a nurse and I work so hard on my school work to make sure I have the best grades possible to get into nursing school. I want to be able to help people and I dream about it, isnt that weird. But I believe doing a job that you love is the best way to live you life.

What was your inspiration to become a nurse?
With no offense to wanting to have a good stable career and making a good paycheck. But from what I have seen, people who go into this profession only for the money, end up not making very good nurses? Is that true? I am just wondering because every nurse I have come across said they do it because they truley want to help the patient and to be of good cause, not only for money. It truley saddens me to see people go into this profession only for money and reason being, if you are focused only on the financial aspect of this profession, you will do a half ass job and truley could give a rats @$$ about patient care. Thats my opinion. I am not trying to knock you for only going into it for the money, you may be a dang good nurse, but thats my opinion for those going into only for that.

What was your inspiration to become a nurse?
My inspiration to pursue nursing is my father. He was involved in a debilitating auto accident. I hate to see him in pain. He is always on pain medication and is always in pain. He told me certain nurses that took care of him were good as gold and made him feel better than the doctors did, but some nurses were bad to him. I want to be able to make a positive difference in someones life. Either if they survive or pass on, but if I can make someones last minutes valuable to them, that is worth more than anything that money can buy.

Doctor and Nurse compatibility
I am abouto go enter into nursing school about a year from now and I am trying to learn and gain as much information as possible. I was wondering, do nurses in general, RN'S or NP's ever have major conflicts with their doctors in charge? I am starting out to become an RN, and then hopefully oneday become a NP, that is my dream. I truley love helping people. I often thought about becoming a doctor, but I am more into patient one on one, and I am the type of person who wants to be able to make a difference in someones life. Just any input or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Where to Start
I am currently taking my prereq's for nursing school and I would like to be able to get some experience now, but I find it nearly impossible to find a place that will take the time to even look at my resume, since I am not licensed right now. Any suggestions on how I could get my foot in the door? Thanks

HOW Do I DO IT!!
Do you have to have a license or anything to start off as a tech position in whatever unit? I live in the DFW area and there are lots of hospitals but I dont know how or where to really begin. Unfortunately my resume is basically business focused with really no history of medical experience and from what i have seen so far, they all want you to have experience. What do you suggest?

HOW Do I DO IT!!
The only medical experience I have at this moment is that I am a studying for my pharmacy tech license so i can do that in the mean time. I would much prefer to work in a hospital doing something besides pharmacy. I would like to get an early touch on patient care, but without any prior experience, what do you think I could do to get my foot into the door early, since i do not have any licenses yet? I really appreciate it. Thanks

HOW Do I DO IT!!
In a couple of years I am going to enroll into nursing school to be an RN. The school I am going to offers classes only during the day and of course you all know about the clinicals. Well right now I am still getting my prereq's out of the way before I start. Any advice on what some of you have done as to what you may have done to support yourself and do schooling at the same time. That is really my only concern. I wish I didnt have to pay bills but that is the way it is. Look forward to hearing from ya.

Does Pharmacy Experience Help??
Another thing that I wanted to add is that, I currently work for Allstate insurance, at a corporate office, and i personally dont want to be here for the fact it isnt any where close to the field that I want to go into, the only problem I am facing is that I know if i stay here they are flexible with hours and could let me go to school and work around my shift, but I dont know what I should do. Stay here go to school, or find another job and chance that they might let me work around school schedule, i do have untill january to make up my mind, but I just know that to get into nursing school and to get hired on in the medical profession, a person needs experience and I am not getting that here. Taking in regard I am studying for the Pharmacy exam and all that. I just dont know, any ideas on that?

Does Pharmacy Experience Help??
Yes, I actually plan on getting iv certified, and certified in compounding, and work in a hospital setting. I would rather prefer to work in the hospital than a retail pharmacy, I have worked mail order pharmacy, but you do not get much experience in anything other than pressing correct buttons on computer. But it is a slow process but it will be worth it all in the end. Thank you all for your support. Right now I am trying to catch up on my math skills, not my strongest point, but i will get there. You all have a good monday! Joshua.

Does Pharmacy Experience Help??
Thank you, I really appreciate that. I am not an expert at math, but I can learn. I did just finish learning the formulas and iv flow rates and stuff like that. It did take me a while to get a grasp on it, 1. I am self studying for the pharmacy exam, and 2. I work all the time and can only study maybe an hour a day. I would like to start going to college in this coming up year and get my basics/prerequisites out of the way, and then go to nursing school. I thought about going to school for an lpn/lvn, but with the way my work is now, i might as well just stick it out in school and just go for the RN license. I just dont want to overwhelm myself too much. Thats why I come here to you all. :)
