Published

once i become a nurse and finish school and write my test,... when I apply for a job can I get into any area of the hospital or do i need more schooling in general? im looking maybe to be in the neonatal section? any comments or advice?

Specializes in LTC.

As long as your an RN you can do neonatal I'm pretty sure.

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

in general, you can be a nurse in most parts on the hospital without any further schooling than the RN license. This changes slightly with some specialties that may want you to tke a certain training that is specific to their floor - ACLS for ICU, ER, and so forth come to mind. For neonatal, you may need to take a PALS class, but all these would likely be offered by your fecility and may not be a prereq for the job, but rather a requirement once hired.

As far as formal schooling - you may need to have a BSN to work in administration or in a leadership role, but again, this is a policy that would be specific to your facility.

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

You have to be trained in the care of a newborn, let alone a preemie or a micropreemie--my training took about 3 months didactics, 1 month bedside orientation (I was already experienced--for the GNs--I believe that can be extended).

You will also need NRP and definitely the S.T.A.B.L.E. program.

You should also look into the neonate/NICU forum of this website.
