This is a poll, if you have male nurses on your unit or not, and how do you feel they blend into the unit, also do they have positive patient experiences?
Thanks everyone in Advance~
I am a nurse and I am male. I have no desire to work in LD, but if I did, I don't see why my gender should be taken into consideration at all. Being male does not make me a sexual preditor. I am also gay and have no interest in female bits. Perhaps lesbians should be kept out of LD?
I have had Muslim women refuse to have me as a nurse and I respect that: it is a religious thing. I have had female patients request not to have a male and that was not honored by any of my managers. On the med floor I worked on, a couple of days it was all male nurses. Once a male patient requested I not be his nurse because he was uncomfortabe with my being gay. The charge nurse said OK, but it was out of respect for me. He was an ugly dog too!
I must say that I don't get as much crap from ANYBODY as some of my female coworkers, but I when I do, I don't put up with it either. I will tell somebody -- to their face and in no uncertain terms -- that they are being inappropriate and walk away. I have done it to attendings, residents, and interns, nurses, patients, etc. I don't play like that.
Now, I am going to get smashed for this, but I must say it: Women have been running the nursing profession for a long time and need to take some responsibilty for its current condition, assume leadership and stop being victims. The status quo ain't working and our current leaders/organizations aren't really interested in the plight of the bedside nurse. Do what you have always done and you will get what you have always gotten...
Yep, and I'm one of them! We are about 70% female nurses and 30% male nurses in my dept...been a nurse over 2.5 years and never once has a patient really had a problem with me as their nurse....there have been a few that wanted a female to clean them up or help them to the commode, stuff like that, b ut never have they refused a male nurse all together

The complaints would still be the same, I am guessing. Respect is a two way street, and military nursing is certainly NOT for everyone.
