What are your hours per week, 36 or 40? How many nurses do you have on your unit and how many beds do you have?
We have 30 nurses with 40 beds and are told we have to work 40 hours b/c of coverage issues. We also utilize float pool and agency nurses if needed. We want to work 36 hours (3-12's) but mgmt. doesn't seem to think it's feasible. We are also hiring.
I seem to think nurses don't stay b/c of the hours, most want 3-12's, but who knows. Some actually said they are leaving for that reason, and I'm sure more will follow. They dont seem to stay very long on our floor and it's not b/c of the people/staff. It's a great floor to work on but the hours SUCK!!
Any ideas or feedback on how to get mgmt to look into a 36 hour work week would be great.
Three 12's - although they often turn into 13. Paid only for hours worked. Usually don't get lunch, but get docked for it.
I used to work office for 5 8's which would turn into 9's. I felt like I was in jail. I was just as tired after an 8 as I am after a 12, so the day was shot either way.
37.5 hours cardiothoracic critical care. Not sure how many nursing staff we have. We have 22 beds.
We do 12.5 hour shifts mainly but can do 7.5hour shifts if we want but mainly 12.5 days and nights. With that we do 13 12.5hour shifts every rota.
There doesn't seem much point to me doing a short shift. Sometimes I'll do a short bank shift if I'm tired. But plenty of bank on our unit.
Currently, I work 24 hour shifts (average 56 hours week!). Yeah!!!
But, I worked 8's 12's and 16's when I worked in the hospital. Give me 12's. 8's fly by. I will note that 3 days a week is sweet. Contributes to continuity of care (I remember an article about this not long ago - not sure if it was critical acre nurse, but - I'll look and see if I can locate it), less folks involved in patient report (handing off is a big Patient Safety issue now!) Nurse satisfaction is important too - facilities that fail to recognize that happy nurses are important to everything will be doomed!!!
Working 5 days week is misery. Add the weekend and you get M-Th, off F, work S-Sn, Off M, work T-F , Off S-Sn, and repeat - Yuck!!! Not me.

I am hired to work 36 hrs. a week with one on call shift a month. we are sooo short staffed that we're encouraged to work as much OT as we can. We even get $$ bonuses for each hour of OT worked
