Do nurse managers and recruiters actually listen when an employee gives a verbal referral

I was just curious as to whether nurse recruiters and nurse managers actually listen when an employee or co-worker gives them a verbal referral for a potential employee?

Does this ever actually work for anyone?

I'm just curious. Thanks for any replies!

Yes, the verbal referral goes a long way, even for large companies. My husband works for a large medical manufacturer. He felt sorry for someone who worked in a biomed shop in the hospital and turned in the guy's (very sorry looking) resume to his supervisor who was hiring in the area. Well, the guy got the job but couldn't be competent if his life depended on it. A couple accounts refused to let him service them and they had to send someone else before he was finally let go a few years later. My husband's boss said a few weeks after they hired the man, "How well do you really know this guy"....I think an employer trusts that if you are a good employee you will refer good future employees....unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't always work out that way and that's how you end up with co-workers that you have no idea how the heck they got the job in the first place.

Got a job for a friend at same place I worked; not too many months later, she was caught diverting injectable stuff and giving herself an IM in the bathroom at work. I felt super-dumb for referring her, even though I had no control over what she did....She was a BFF for a looong time! (before they were ever called that). It really surprised and disappointed me, though in hindsight I should've noted it, since I remember thinking once, "I wonder why her pupils are so pinpoint?" D'Oh!

My job has a referral system and incentive. $50(for MAs, I believe) to $15,000 (For MDs/VPs/Directors). Guess I need to call some of my MD friends up, huh?

Dang I have gotten 4 Docs hired at my various places of employment for free just because I wanted to work with them. I would have negotiated something for myself if I thought I could make that kind of money, lol.

Thats awful! Especially since she was referred by you it could make you look bad too! I'd be so mad haha. But you're right you have no control over what she does.

Actually, I never answered this question...and yes, it did work for me. Twice, in fact. Once was for the first nursing job I ever had (i.e., my gateway into psych). The second was for a PRN job for an organization that is notoriously hard to get into.

.....my gateway into psych.....

You need to go over to the "Jacob Rockstar, RN, Psych Nurse Action Figure" thread under 'Specialties'. I think it's highly likely Davey Do could come up with some interesting cartoons inspired by the above phrase, if you brought it up there!
