Do Not Want to Take the NCLEX to Work - HELP??

Published

I am an RN with a masters and 15 years experiance working and teaching at a nursing college in Thailand. My English is very good (TOEFL 567). I will be in the USA for perhaps a year with my American husband. I will have a green card but I don't know what kind of jobs are available to me. I know I can't work as an RN without NCLEX and or CGFNS but what other kind of work can I get. Perhaps some LPN type work? Any ideas"

I don't really want to go to the trouble of NCLEX for a temporary visit but I want to work somewhere.

I will be in the Portland Or. area.

Hi and welcome

Even for LPN you have to sit NCLEXPN instead of NCLEXRN. Depends what you want to do to what type of work

To work in the US as a nurse, you need to take the NCLEX exam. Period. You are not licensed without that. So there is really nothing that you can do in the field without that.

Even on a temporary basis, you need a license. Makes no difference to the state Board of Nursing.

Thank you for the very usefull information. Any suggestions out there for non nursing jobs?

I know I should take the NCLEX, but by the time I take it and get licenced it may not really be worth it for me.

Thanks again, this forum is fantastic.

If you have a few months, get a license. Unless you do not work in Health Care, with the license you will be able to do about anything, even teach. But without, nothing.

You only need to get the license for your state, you do not need to take the English exams or get a Visa Screen Certificate.

Your choice, but you will not find any work that will pay you as well if you do not have the license, and your only experience is in health care.

Any work as a nurse requires a license and the only wat to get that is to take the NCLEX exam.

Thank you Susan4 for the additional info. I'm very surprised when you say there is no need for an English exam. I presumed I would have to take TOEFL or IELTS as my score is now over two years old. And you mention the ability to teach, wow, I didn't even consider that. Can you expand on your thoughts a little more?

Thank you again.

You have a green card, so you are not required to take the English exam series, since you will not be applying for one on your own.

Take the time to read the Primer at the top of the International Forum, it will answer many questions that you have.

Where in Thailand were you teaching? Very familiar with the area. And where did you get your MSN? Which university there? Most of the deans there got their PhDs in the US.
