Do new grads find jobs as LVN?

Do new grads find jobs as LVN? How long can I expect it to be between being licensed and working? Are there things I can do, to boost my chances?

I graduated in July, got licensed in September, and just got hired on a sub-acute unit!!! I start an 8-week orientation in about a month. I had applied to about 20 facilities before things finally fell into place. The best advice I could give any nursing student would be to get a job in a facility you want to work at after you graduate. Whether it's CNA, unit secretary, etc, it will boost your chances of getting hired and you will already be familiar with the unit and the people in charge. Best of luck to you!!!

if you don't mind working for a snf or memory care unit, the veterans home of california in west los angeles is looking for new grad lvns for their new facility. i think they expect some new grads who want to work in acute care, will come and work for a year, to get their year experience, and then leave. it is hard to find lvns here, so i think it is understood that is just what happens to get good nurses, even if it is just for a year. i know there will be a new grad program starting this fall. the pay is good though, like $21-$26/hr with full benefits. you can call our hr rep or you can just go to the website and fill out an application

i am a veteran, that is also a nursing student. hopefully i can get a job here after graduation. i will have to use my veteran status and tax benefit status for veterans as a selling point though. fingers are crossed. but i think i will start with some volunteer work first there. thank you for the heads up.

r they still hiring im trying to actually get with the va..i went on the website and there isnt any open positions for the wla its jus for long beach!

The calvet website has opening for west LA. I just navigated from that site

I live in the Tyler, Tx area. My LVN program does clinicals at our 2 local hospitals and they offer positions to us work as GVN's when we graduate. If you go to the job openings in our paper, the healthcare section usually has a lot of LVN openings, especially in LTC. Usually every area of the hospitals (including the clinics) have LVN openings if you look on their website. One hospital about 30 miles from here doesn't hire LVN's at all. So it depends where you live.

Hi! I just graduated from an LVN program in Feb 2011 and was licensed and ready to go in the end of July. I have had problems finding a job in both the SD area and Fresno County area. The problem here is that most places require experience and they refer you to nursing homes. I've called and applied there too but they are not hiring.

The best advice I can give is to start as a CNA or other job in a place where LVNs work already, especially nursing homes...then once they know your work ethic and they are hiring, you can stand out. Also, I've been told to apply for internships at hospitals for instance (this is what I'm starting to do now). You're not alone. Good luck to everyone having a hard time. Don't give up, just as I tell myself.
