Do you have to learn how to swim if you become Navy Nurse

Published

From what I understand most Navy Nurses won't be in a Naval ship during their years as Navy Nurses but is there a requirement for Naval nurses to learn how to swim once they are in training to become officers.

Yes, it is a requirement that you know how to swim. Even us land-loving Soldiers are required to know how to swim.

Sorry, couldn't help myself...I wish I could use better emojis on AN but they're always blocked!

Yes you do. But they will give you lessons. Although it will be early in the morning. Back in my day a woman had a very slim chance to be on a ship. But we all had to know.

As I understand it, it isn't as uncommon these days, especially for nurses to be on hospital ships. Had a good friend when I was in the service who deployed to Haiti as an LTJG. She and a bunch of the other gals with her certainly got their time in at sea!

It isn't. We were only allowed on med ships and sub tenders in the early 80's. How times have changed.

Yup, learned to swim compliments of the US Navy. Had to get up at 0530 while at OIS in Newport RI. Got deployed too on USNS Comfort. We need to get someone who is currently serving to give info on what other types of ships female nurses serve on besides hospital ships.
