Do I have what it takes?!

Published

I start nursing school May 27th - I've worked smart and hard for this....and I'm nervous I "don't have what it takes"! I know and believe that you can do what you think you can do, and I know I can do it! I'm just kinda somewhat nervous/worried because I feel like I don't know anything about nursing. I've done all my pre-requesites and so all I'll be taking (thank God!) are my nursing classes and it's a 5 semester program for my ADN.

Did anyone else feel like this? Any help?

Thanks! :redbeathe:redpinkhe:redbeathe

Hope some of your fellow students will chime in- but it's perfectly normal to feel that way, and the same work habits you developed to get all your pre-requisites out of the way will serve you well in nursing school.

Remember, nursing school only happens one day at a time, and even though it's scary and exciting all at once to contemplate finally starting to realize your dream, there's just no way to answer such a broad based question.

Don't worry about not knowing anything about nursing right now, either. You'll be fine.

Remember you can always come here on the boards and post in the Student Nurse's forums for specific questions or concerns the group can help you with. Welcome to the adventure! :)

I agree that it's perfectly normal to feel nervous when starting anything new. You will feel like this again at clinicals. Just remember that you get out of it, what you put in. If you decline to do the reading, you may fail. If you decline to understand the reason behind some information, you may fail. I will tell you that I was really nervous that I didn't know anything "nursing" related and hadn't taken A&P for a LONG while. I have had to break out the old A&P books a few times this semester for a refresher but really, the information wasn't that hard. Good luck to you and you will do fine if you put in the time!

I had to read your post twice as I have been accepted to an ADN program that starts May 7 and I feel the same way! I think that I have been reaching for this goal for sooooo long that finally getting to this point is almost overwhelming.

All I seem to do in this time before starting is hand out here on allnurses and soak up the advise. I have started a file on different products, cheat sheets and other things I will need to review later. While I have my book list, I don't have the money to buy them all and have decided to wait until orientation to buy them in case I need others or older versions will work. Based on other posts I have been "nesting" by preparing a study area in the house that is hands off for husband and kids and by stocking up on items we use a lot. I don't need the stress of running out of toilet paper while preparing for tests!

We were accepted for a reason, I am sure we will do great! Best of luck to you.

I remember being intimidated on the first day of nursing school. Some already had hospital experience (CNA, LPN, paramedic). Also the tests were mostly application questions, different from the theoretical tests one usually takes in prerequisite courses....

I asked the same question too--but i think Nursing school itself will help develop the qualities you need...you'll be forced to leave your comfort zone once you start doing clinicals. Also, if you really want to be a nurse so badly, you'd have to be a hard worker to pass the tests, finish off care plans, etc...

So just...do it. and no matter how tough it gets, keep going. =)

I feel the same way. I've been on this road for 2 years now... and I am so afraid of the idea that I've invested this much and I'm not good enough.
