Do I have a chance?

Published

Hello! I am new to this site and so excited to meet fellow pre nursing/nursing students. I'm supposed to apply for nursing school for the Fall of 2017 and wanted to gauge my success rate of getting in. After this semester I will have completed my general pre-recs and if I do not get in the first time, I don't really know what to do. So as of right now my general GPA is 3.5, my science GPA is 3.4 (I believe). I got two b's in Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2. Still have to take Micro and Patho. My school's requirements are a minimum 3.0 GPA and a 2.5 science GPA but obviously want higher grades. Do I have a chance? If not, what can I do? Thank you!!!

Forgot to add: They do not have tests for admission. It is just grades and an interview of a RN which you have to write up then reflect if it changed your opinion on nursing. There is not specific mention of volunteering but I suppose it would not hurt my chances.

At my college they had a sheet with all the requirements and points assigned along with extra points for things such as GPA, working CNA or LPN, etc. They were also willing to tell me the average score of those admitted and how many apply vs how many are accepted. I took all the above and used it for planning all my pre-reqs and trying to figure my odds. I would ask your school's nursing department about seeing if you could get some of that info..if anything at least the point sheet.

Good luck to you!

Ask them what the average accepted applicant's GPA is. That will give you a better idea as to whether you will get in or not.

As mentioned above, ask the program the average GPA of acceptance. Plus, most RN programs have a program orientation. Usually, they will give you an idea of what they expect from students applying, and or what they would like to see or read in the interview questions or when they interview you. At the end of it all, you want to stand out. Your nursing program should have it's form of orientation. Go check it out, if they don't ask the counselor that is specifically for the nursing program and ask what you should expect or ways to stand out.

Welcome! I love your enthusiasm and am so excited for you!

Doesn't it seem premature to worry about not getting in when you haven't even applied? And what do you mean you won't know what to do if you don't get in? You keep applying and keep taking the other classes that you need such as Micro in addition to general classes required for graduation, no? :)

Don't over analyze it. If you meet your school's requirement, then yes, you have a chance. My school uses the lottery system. I got in on my first try but another classmate got in on her 7th. So she didn't get in right away. Life goes on and she survived and you will too. Another got accepted into two programs on her first try but flunked out while the 7th attempt girl is still in. Don't get hung up on needing to get in right away.

The only person whom can truly answer this question would be the school that you are trying to get into. Talk to the guidance counselor/admissions and ask for tips on how to stand out if applicable. Make sure to pay attention to the deadline, fill out the application completely and follow the instructions to a T! The part that I could, I actually went in to see a nursing guidance counselor and had him look it over with me!

You may also want to apply at more than one school in order to have a better chance at getting accepted. If you get accepted into more than one program, you can simply decline the others.

Good luck.
