Do Hospital pursue broken nurse contracts?

Published

hey guys!

I am starting CRNA school August 2018, and I am in a nurse contract till October 2018. I have heard from people who have left my hospital that they have NOT been pursued or have had anything show up on their credit report for breaking contract, anyone have experience with hospital actually going after people who leave contract? all thoughts and experiences will be appreciated! Thanks!!! :)

And sadly I am in Texas now and my school is in Florida, so I have no choice but to leave. I took yalls advice and scheduled a meeting with the HR lady in control of our contracts on March 1. I will let yall know how it goes. Any advice on what to say to her? Thanks!

How about the truth?

Seriously: "I was accepted to Florida CRNA school but they will be starting in August. My contract with Texas Hospital runs until October. I am aware of the obligations of my contract, however, I can't pass up this opportunity to go to school. Is there something that could be worked out that would allow me to fulfill or terminate my contact two months early?"

Since you're planning on leaving anyway, you may as well spit it all out now and see if they're willing to work with you. No guarantees, but they'll probably take it a lot better if you discuss it now than if you were to tell them in, say, July.

Either that, or postpone school until after you finish the contract, which may not be wise given how competitive it is to get into a CRNA program. And there's no guarantees that they would hold your spot until the next cohort starts...though you could always ask.

Good for you, and I agree with the above. Don't be sickeningly sweet, but it wouldn't hurt to let them know that keeping your word is important to you and you're interested in brainstorming ways you can fulfill the spirit of the contract and still be ready for the start of school.

Thanks JK and Meriwhen, that's kinda the way I wanted to handle the conversation, I just wanted to pick other peoples brains so that I don't go in there and say something completely foolish, thank you everyone for the advice! and comments or advice are still welcome!

I applied to CRNA school this year thinking I wouldn't have a chance, so that next year when I applied again, I would be out of contract and have already been a re applicant for their CRNA school, but, like I said, everything happens for a reason and I am so excited. CRNA school is for sure an opportunity I cant pass up. Thanks all!

Regardless of it they will pursue a person or not it not the point. You entered into a contact. I'm sure you are not the first staff to have to leave. I'm sure there are options to buy yourself out of the final two months on the contract. Maybe you have enough leave to take to make up most of that time you'd be leaving early. I'm sure buying out two months is not that much. Find out your options and choose ther best to suit both you and the employer. To me allowing it to go into a credit report and/or not working with the employer is wrong. It will affect your position with that company in the future. It could affect how they respond to the question as to if you are rehirable or not when you need a reference. It may affect how the facility deals with future nurses contracts.
