Do honors help gain a job

Published

As a transfer I can't get phi eta sigma honors without taking at least 3 honors classes including English honors (I took English I and II already). Even though I already took history, I'd repeat it in honors also. I think the 3rd is an honors lit. My grades are A's and one B+ so I just wanted more to show for the hard work but I guess not if it hardly matters to help get a job, I just don't want to feel like I wasted time taking English and history plus I have nursing classes to focus on. If it helps though I'll do it. Thanks!

P.S. we don't yet have a nursing honors but I'm going to do my darn darndest to get a chapter started at my school.

Now this I can agree with! I hate to say it but it seems like these places value the education of the doctors more than the pay or autonomy of any of the nurses. When I was looking for a job, in OB, the nurses do more in a community hospital then at a teaching institution. However, it seems like people are chasing the name more than the job

And in many cases it is the double edged sword like a 4.0 gpa. There are those who will be enamored by the pedigree and those who are either jealous or can't appreciate someone working for peanuts in an effort to have a fancy name on the resume. In my area the big names here don't mean much in the local arena because we know they aren't all that and a bag of chips but it might seem impressive to a hospital in a different state. Who knows but I always went for the money and haven't regretted it.

If it makes you feel any better they usually pay their Docs poorly also.

Yep. I had an offer with the " top" institution in my city that is known across the country and I had an offer with a smaller Community Hospital in my area. I ended up choosing the Community Hospital because the pay was the same and the drive was much better. After having my externship at the top hospital, I realized sometimes the name is just a name. I didn't deem the experience great enough to warrant a downtown commute doing the same job for the same pay and benefits

I don't think I would take 3 extra classes to get honors. Your grades already reflect that you do well in school. Now I do believe having good grades may help you when it comes to job hunting. There is one magnet hospital here that offers a residency program. It's very competitive. They ask for transcripts. To be picked to work in specialties like the OR you must have a minimum of 3.0 gpa.
