do you have to deal with poo,pee and vomit in the ER if you're a RN? a PA? a NP? if yet, on a daily basis? just wondering. if this question sounds weird, dont mind me

Another thought.....surely you could find a few hours on one day, somewhere that you could shadow a nurse.

Call your local hospital and see if they could make some arrangements for you to do this.

I bet they could find a fantastic nurse who would be willing to take you in and show you some of the ropes.

Before you make any serious comitments to a program you REALLY need to do some further investigation. You are very young and have alot of time yet to make decisions.

Do this for yourself. I think you would be surprised at how much grit you might find in yourself.

thank you pam and others!

i live with my parents because my school is a fifteen minute drive from my house and i do feel a lot of pressure from them. i think i would disappoint them a LOT if i dont figure out my career until im like in my thirties :uhoh3: i told my parents that ive set my mind on nursing but they probably have no idea what nurses really do..how they have to "get down and get dirty" they do think that nursing is a hard laboring job though...the sad thing is when i told my parents that im interested in becoming a pharmacist or an optometrist my dad said do whatever i want to do but my mom thinks im nuts bcuz from what she told me she doesnt think i would study hard enough to make it..she thinks im going to cry and whine that im sick of studying and will want to quit..my dad didnt say that but i dont think he trusts that i will study hard to make it :stone i dont think im up for the challenge though..when i try i get good grades but i dont try often haha. ok i dont think this is a laughing matter. i really dont know what to do anymore. i thought i was set on studying nursing but now maybe im not cut out for it. what is cna btw? i just started working at a busy clothing store and i study full time so i dont have time to go visit a hospital to shadow or work. ive tried those skill/personality assessment tests online to see if those would help me decide on a career but i wasn't interested in any of them. any career advices for me? from what ive read and from what other nurses have advised me, i find nurses very informed in what goes on in this crazzzyyy world and know a lot of things that i for sure dont know about. what do your daughters and sons do for a living? :chuckle

If you are looking at nursing on the mistaken belief that it will be "easier" to study than pharmacy then you had better look elsewhere. The nursing course is every bit as tough to get through and then some.

We are not an "Easy option" profession in any way shape or form.

no i dont think the nursing classes wiill be a breeze. not all all. but you had to admit that pharmacists and optometrists take more science classes than RNs. they're doctors..

what other medical jobs are there besides nursing? i have to admit that i love the job security the most about nursing. and the salary isnt bad, though i think nurses deserve more for what they do and put up with to help the sick :uhoh21:

They are NOT doctors!!!

I suggest you do an online search and really look at some of the course outlines. I would also spend some time reading the threads in the nursing student forums if you really want an idea of what this is about.

they're not? i always thought they were..just not physicians. i did do enough reading thank you. it's not the studying that im worried about. like my dad said, there is no such thing as an education that you cant handle because it's too hard. you can't handle it because you're too lazy. of course im going to have to put in a great amound of effort in nursing school but i've heard from this girl who's studying to become a pharmacist that she's thinking about changing her major into nursing because the pharmacist courses are just getting too hard for her :uhoh21:

my number one reason for choosing nursing i think is the job security. i thought once i become a nurse all i have to do is work hard and well and i do know how to sympathize for sick people and im not so cold hearted that i would ignore their pain when my job is to help them feel better. i know lots of people who graduated from UCLA, HARVARD, etc and are jobless because they chose not so helpful majors or careers that are too competitive for their own good. this is not how i want to become and my parents would hate to see me that way

i would love to become an interior decorator but ive never decorated any rooms in my life and that career is very competitive and you have to constantly search for jobs or go into a large company that has many clients. i dont want to spend years and years just building up my work reputation. and who knows if im even good at decorating. my room doesnt look that bad though

do ADN nurses have to deal with these too?

do ADN nurses have to deal with these too?

ADN nurses deal with the same thing as any other kind of nurse. RN's, LPN's deal with the same stuff, regardless of their basic education.

You mentioned job security......the reason for job security is there is an acute nursing shortage, the reason for the shortage is it is getting harder and harder to get people to consider doing this kind of job. It is not easy to get into nursing school, it is not easy to get thru school, don't kid yourself. It is not easy staying in school because of the demanding workload. It is not for the faint of heart or the lazy! Finally, it is not easy to be a nurse. Your first few years are filled with fear of failure. Read some of the threads started by new nurses and the trials they have faced. Many don't make it. I think if you spend a little time reading thru many of these threads you will get a good idea of what nurses actually do.

You say you do not have time to shadow a nurse to really find out what to expect. Will you have time after you have spent years of school persuing something you know nothing about and may not even like? You say time is running out....dear, you are still very young. You do not even have a grasp on the concept of time. Do the groundwork, do the research, do yourself a big favor and figure out what you want to do before you blast forward. If you have to take a semester off to work in the medical field, you would get a better idea. If your parents are footing the bill, they would be better off letting you figure out what route to take, than to let you struggle and taking needless classes. Tell them of your confusion. They are only trying to help you sort this out.

My children are grown and would have never considered nursing. My daughter has her Masters in interior design and works for a large firm in NC. My son works for Verizon phone company and his specialty is computers/tech support. Both a far cry from nursing, both requiring completely different career tracks.

There is no hurry to grow up. It took my daugher a while to figure out what she needed to do, but once she found her niche, she excelled in it. You can too once you find something you are passionate about. You just need to explore more options.
