Hi all - I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing I am with classmates who really don't seem to be making much of an effort. I'm stunned that we are only 4 weeks into our 18 month program and so many people are blowing off classes, refusing to do homework, and not taking advantage of the additional low-cost mini-courses that my school offers. It simply doesn't make any sense to me.
Maybe it's because I'm a little older than most of them or because this is my second career so I'm most accustomed to the "you don't have to like it, you just have to DO it" aspect of things. I don't know. I'm just disappointed that so few people are taking this endeavor seriously. I thought, with as competitive as this program allegedly is, there would be more enthusiasm & drive within the group.
Is this just a common thing for LPN programs (i.e. a few high achievers & everyone else is either mediocre or fails out) or just mine?
I think in any program you will have the really dilligent hard workers and the folks that appear to be slacking off, and those that do slack off in different areas. In our program, we started with 24 in January and there are 12 left in my original cohort. We had 12 join us in Clinical I that for whatever reason, did not pass the first time, or were going part- time, or failed a class last year and had to repeat it. In our program, those that failed had to wait a full year and do remediation before they were accepted back in. Those that come back, really want to be there. We have been told that our group that passed clinical I will still lose a few more to up to half before graduation in December. Every program is different, ours is pretty tough, and I think the 12 of us that are progressing worked for it. We lost two in our class that worked very hard, they just didn't have the 80% to pass. In our program, 79% is a fail... that is a high C everywhere else, so it is not always the slackers that fail.
I am so grateful that I have the classmates I do, we are all supportive of each other and there are no "cliques" or weirdness in all of the 24. We have one student that is a little obnoxious, but she is also smart and cares very deeply about what she is doing, so we just try and help her realize when she is out of bounds, and she is pretty receptive to it. We also have AMAZING instructors.. tough but fair, and absolutely incredible in clinical.
As far as your situation goes, just try and find the positives where you can, focus on you and find a couple of classmates that you can align yourself with so you have some back up ( you never know when you will need it), and realize that the only one taking that NCLEX for your license will be you, and no one can slack that test, so look toward graduation and the fact that you will be a nurse before you know it!!!
Yelp it was like that in my class and they are no longer in the program. My class started out with 32 people and now we are down to just 20 which is fine by me. The same people who were trouble makers, backstabbed the teacher, cheaters, never put any effort into there work, etc are no longer there.

It's very common in my program. Some care while others slack off on assignments and studying. To be honest I could care less of what others do because I have to focus on my learning to pass. Either you are committed and giving it 100%, if you're not then don't expect to pass. I admit while doing prereqs I procrastinated and did just fine, but in nursing school I never procrastinate, there's to many test and assignments to complete.
