Do i have a chance?

Nurses Career Support

Published

hi everyone,

i'm a newbie here and i'm looking for some advice from lpns or rns.

first a little about myself, i am a 32 yo stay at home mom to two great kids. i have worked as a na for the past 8 years (off and on) and really enjoy working in ltc. my dilemma is that i want to enter nursing school and it has been 14 years since i graduated high school. i need the biology prereq and upgrade my math. i guess my ? really is, how hard is it to learn this hs stuff again when you've been out of the 'loop' for a while? i was always a c-c+ student in math and made b-b+ in everything else. i always wanted to be a nurse from day 1, but think that i was too nonchalant in hs.

any advice for a gal who really wants a better outlook on life?

thanks!

darlene

hi... i'm sure you can do it as long as you put your heart into it... it is not an easy course but with determination you will make it... you are only 32 and you are still young...and plus, you have hospital experience which will make it a lot easier for you.. i just recently graduated and trust me, some of the students i went to school with were in their 50's... if they did it, you can do it..

I had to retake the sciences after 14 years also. It wasn't easy, but I did it. As an older student you have a different incentive. When we are young we have a lot more things on our mind than math and science. As adults if we really want something we dig in and do it. It was hard, but I did it. I have no regrets. GO FOR IT! What have you got to lose? You'll make your kids proud.

hello everyone.. i need advice.. i just recently took my enclex test on sept, 20 2005 here in california.. i know california doesnt participate in quick result of the test but how long does it usually take for the ca website... its been 2 days and i'm very anxious because i still dont see my name in the california website... i got about 105 questions and i'm just worried sick of failing.... pls let me know.. how long was the wait for most of you to see your name in the state website??

Shyone- you will get a better response if you put your question in a different post. But it can take lots longer than 2 days for things to get posted. I waited 11 days for my results.

As far as the Original Poster... There is not that much Math involved in Nursing, and nothing beyond Algebra. I mean, yes there is a lot of drug calculation and stuff, but you do not have to do calculus. The sciences can be difficult- especially anatomy and Physiology. But, as someone already mentioned, older students do tend to be "differently" motivated. (not at all to say regular aged students aren't, but they do tend to be different).

I'd go for it. You'll be great, and your kids will have a really cool lesson of seeing you go after something and achieve it!!! Good Luck.

thanks so much for the replies, i really do appreciate it.

katiebell, i know that nursing math is quite basic, but it frustrates me to know that i have to complete and achieve over 65% in grade 12 math to get accepted. why do i have to know trig in order to get into the rn program? i'm okay with algebra, but like i said trig is a different story. i wish i would have applied myself better in high school. thanks for the advice. i really hope and pray that i can make it through upgrading. i know that i would do well as a nurse, i certainly have enough practice w/bedside nursing as a na.

i'm going to keep at it and try my very best.

thanks everyone. :)

I didn't realize you had to know trig...that is a little strange. I feel fro you, and I am glad I am not trying to get into your program... :imbar

I think you can definitely do it. Just keep working at it, it probably won't be easy (trig!!!) but in the end, you will do great!

go for it!!

i'm a 44 yr old male with 7 kids (five still at home) and am in 1st year of rn school, it's my 3rd career change. in high school i was a c average student and did horribly in math and science. i now have a 3.8 gpa, go to school and work full time and still have time for the family. school has never been so fun (nor challenging). i say "go for it"

awesome!! thank you! :)

seven kids, huh? you must be busy. you are doing great!

Taking classes as an adult is very different. I think you may find you are an "A" student now. Having to pay for it yourself and make all the other sacrifices you have to make makes it a lot easier to get those good grades:)

i feel you in this. i am in the same pickle. although i am not a cna, or lna, or na or anything.

i have an associates degree in travel and tourism. the job i have now is in the field, but i don't need the degree to do it.

i was never good in studies in high school, or in most of my college days for that matter. i changed majors 3 times, and settled with t&t because it was very simple...

now i may want to do nursing. thanks to my previous college days, i have 5 courses out of the way. just have the a&phys., microbiology, human growth and develpment, intro to psych then the nursing classes themselves.

i personally was going to take the a&p, psych, etc. one or two at a time, because since i have a hard time focusing and have never been good in the subjects, i want to be able to devote the time i need, and concentration, and not overwhelm myself...

i myself am not sure if i can do it.... :chair:
