Do anyone have advice on what to take to my first clinicals?

Published

Did anyone take little notes, pocket drug book, or anything to help the. I'm wondering what can I bring?

On my first day i only brought the necessary items like: stethoscope, watch, penlight, black ink pen, scissors, and a little mini notebook for writing down things i got in morning report and things to be done from the treatment book if any.

+ stethoscope

+ watch

+ penlight

+ black clicky pens (so you don't have to worry about the caps)

+ scissors/hemostat (you never know when you'll need a clamp! I actually needed one my first clinical...well, not really NEED, because you could easily kink the tubing of a PEG tube but I find it easier with a hemostat)

+ folder w/ some extra paper or a storage clipboard (clipboard that opens up so you can put stuff inside...mine stores a lot of stuff and has a calculator on it. I got it for ~$10 @ Walmart - definitely a good thing to have!)

Try doing a search here on allnurses. Maybe type in "clinical" or "first clinical" or "Clinical help" any term that you think would be in a post for this. There is lots of good advice on here already.

This is what I take with me to clinicals:

Clipboard that holds all my papers inside (my instructor is the handout king! lol) $10 @ Walmart

Penlight

Stethescope

Second Hand Watch

Davis Drug Guide

Little Notebook to take notes quickly

Basically, I would ask your instructor what he/she requires or allows on your rotation. I found that on my first rotation, we could only bring our stethescope and little notebook. This rotation, I am able to bring everything that is listed above.

HTH! Good luck

If u have a dollar tree or 99 cents store, stock up. I would get pens ball point easy and cheap and I always ended up putting them in my pony tail. I got a clippboard from there and a small note book. One more thing, Barnes and Noble or Boarders have a quick and pocket sized handy dandy notr book, the pn pocket guide, Its the bible!!!! good luck have fun, explore and do what ever is asked of you, hook up with a partner the same way. You guys will become the GO To's of the group!!!

The first day is usually orientation only and paperwork (at least at my school). You can bring your stethescope, BP cuff, and small notepad just in case your CI starts you on assessments, but I doubt it... Good luck!!
