Distance Education RPN to BSCN

Published

Hello!

I am just finishing my second year in the RPN program and would like to bridge to BSCN. Has anybody found a school that offers this program through distance education? I can't move my family to another town so I can go to school. I am open to any school in the Country as long as it is offered online!

Thanks!

Athabasca U. based in Alberta. Be aware that you must hold an AB practice permit in addition to your home province's, all clinicals are in Alberta, and I believe they have a required number of paid hours of experience (requires references) to be admitted to the course.

Thanks for your reply!

Unfortunately that doesn't help because I can't move out to Alberta to complete my clinicals. I'm looking for a program that will allow me to complete the course work online and do my clinicals here. I also won't have an Alberta license when I'm done my schooling since I was trained in Ontario, but thanks anyway!

You can hold practice permits in multiple provinces.

As far as I know, Athabasca is the only online option.

Do you know if they offer it part-time? I wonder if it's worth doing this and sacrificing moving there for clinicals... hmmm... Because I was thinking I could take all the non-clinical courses separately from the clinical ones.. this sounds very interesting as I better learn on my own and barely go to school anyhow..hmm

For Athabasca, you dont need to move there for your clinicals. I believe there are 4 clinicals and you do it at your own pace. What I would suggest is that when you are working, speak to your human resources department to assist you in coordinating your clinical experience. Another option would be to scale back to part time casual after you have applied to the program so that you are able to go to Alberta for a few weeks for the clinical placements.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

You can take up to 7 years to complete your program through Athabasca. Clinicals are ONLY offered in Alberta, and you do indeed have to hold a valid Alberta registration - which includes a continuing competency requirement annually for renewal. Registration with CLPNA is currently $250 a year. You might want to factor that into your deliberations. http://www.athabascau.ca/cnhs/ug_lpn_bn.php

Dear all,

I am really very thankful to all of you to guide nurses like us who are pursuing higher education and are exploring for it.

I am an RN and having 6.5 yrs of experience in this field. I have planned to pursue my higher education this year. At the moment I am very confused, since 3 days I am surfing on internet and on this forum as well regarding online Post RN BScN program. There are bundles of information however, I need some refine guidance in this regard:

1. Which universities (school of nursing) are offering Online Post RN BScN program? (Worldwide accredited)...I have read about Clarion University on this forum however, where the complete information can be gathered from?

2. Which universities in Canada are offering this program online? Does McMaster offer this program online?

3. Here aptitude test starts in March and April and program starts in October. WHat about universities there?

4. Please suggest, online program would be worth doing or on campus option would be good? I cannot afford living there therefore I am looking for online options.

5. Whether online and on campus degrees are considered equivalent?

I am sorry if I am repeating this topic or any of the question again but I really need support of you people in this regard. If it has been already discussed previously please guide me through the link. I need maximum information on online course.

Waiting for your responses.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Hi angel81

Athabasca has an online post- diploma bscn program, however, to enrol in the program you need to be a RN registered within Canada see http://www.athabascau.ca/cnhs/ug_rn_bn.php#Enrolment Requirements

I don't think McMaster offers the post RN diploma BScN program anymore, according to their website the last stream intake was in 2008, also I don't think the program was offered online.

I am not familiar with Clarion so cannot comment.

Thanks dishes for your response. I agree with you and I went to the website earlier as well for Athabasca. However, I am not up to the criteria set by Athabasca as I am not registered within Canada.

McMaster is in collaboration with our University and yes, it is not offering degrees online. I can go for our university (Aga Khan University) as well which is also recognized but I am having an obstacle. I will have to leave my job or obtain study leaves and for this I will have to sign a bond for future which would be difficult.

My future plan is for Canada whenever job market gets settled and right now I cannot afford travelling and staying there for study therefore I am looking for online options for bsn. I am in process of surfing, hope will get a suitable option for me.

Thanks once again dishes for your cooperation in all threads, it supports me....

Hi angel81

I believe most North American universities that offer online BScN programs, will require students to hold a valid Canadian or US licence, but I could be wrong so keep surfing, see what you come up with.

Does Aga Khan offer the post-diploma BScN on a fulltime or part time basis? If it is currently offered fulltime, do they have plans to expand their teaching format in the future? Some Ontario universities offer post-diploma BScN programs on a part-time basis and most RNs continue to work while taking them. I guess the ideal situation is for Aga Khan to offer the BScN online or part time so you to continue to work while increasing your education.
