Dismissed from Gwinnett Tech in GA, What are my options?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello all,

Here is a recap on my situation:

I placed top 10 of the 60 students accepted to Gwinnett Technical Colleges ADN program in fall 2014. I did well on my first exams in fundamentals and pharmacology however I began to struggle with pharm. Their didactic passing cutoff is 75% and since I was at a low B I lacked so much confidence. The Faculty at the time kept pushing for any of us who were close to the edge of not passing that didactic to just drop with W on your transcript and reenter the following year.

I finally caved in to that even though I had a high B in fundamentals and a low B or high C in Pharmacology. I re-entered the program fall 2015 and did very well. I ended up with an a in Pharmacology, a high B in fundamentals, and 1 B in med-surg 1, and one C in Med surge to period. Each of these semesters I had to take a dosage calculations exam of which I passed on my first try.

Finally in Fall 2016, I was in Pediatrics and OB nursing. We took our dosage calculation exams the first week of school. I did not pass my OB in two tries for the dosage calculation exam and was dismissed from my program as I am not allowed more than one reentry. I withdrew from the program in enough time to only have Ws on these particular nursing courses I didn't complete. That being said I'm not sure what schools will consider me. I've done very well in the past and regret giving in to the faculty's advice my first time around, because now it's harming my chances of getting in anywhere else because there os nothing on paper stating my purposes for withdrawing. There is no proof that I was not failing the classes. So I look like such a flight risk that I'm worried that no school will take me.

Are there any schools out there or does anyone know of any advisors from particular nursing colleges in Georgia who could help me? Thank you for your time in reading this. My GPA is very good, I score high on my entrance exams, and the only thing I actually feailed was the dosage calculation exam for OB. I feel like it's haunting me.

Thanks

NNM

I am sorry this happened to you. I may not be able to give you the advice you probably need. I am from NY state and the schools I will be applying to indicate that they do not accept the students who failed/were dismissed (for any particular reason) from other nursing programs. I am not sure if this is the case in Georgia, though.

1. You could appeal the dismissal. What is the worst that could happen if you appeal or challenge this? Although the chance of being readmitted is unlikely, it is worth a valiant shot.

2. You could complete an LPN program that does not pay attention to previous grades earned. A frequent member of these forums failed out of an ADN program. She later completed an LPN program, then graduated from an LPN to BSN program and is now an RN. This is someone who learned well from failure.

3. You could attempt to get admitted into another ADN or BSN program. Be prepared to explain during the interview the ways in which you learned from your previous failure from nursing school and how you have grown as a student.

4. As a last resort, you could enroll in an investor-owned Atlanta area school with a nursing program such as Chamberlain College. These types of schools are usually very welcoming to those who previously failed other nursing programs.

Yes, many, MANY nursing programs in GA say the same thing. I am going to try a couple of other programs before I ultimately choose Chamberlain. I am scared that even though their facility looks and appears amazing, I won't have a decent experience...It might just be me letting the money aspect put me in a heap of doubt about my ability to make it through an even longer program than my last one. Hopefully, Athens Tech will consider me.

Gwinnett Tech has an official, black and white, outlined appeal process. Ultimately I won, but didn't pass my last attempt. They do no offer appeals for someone who failed following a won appeal.

I wouldn't mind doing an LPN program except for that most ADN and BSN programs will make me retake all my science prereqs by the time I get to apply, making it take even longer to get the degree than from Chamberlain.

I am going to try applying to GA State, Athens Tech, Kennesaw, University of N. GA, and Chamberlain. I was already disqualified from Clayton State, Georgia Gwinnett, and Georgia Perimeter (unless I wait a 5 year period to apply from the date of my dismissal).

As for Chamberlain, I have already researched how much my education will cost (without the interest of the loans I would need to take out to pay for it), which came to an estimated 50 grand. I make less than 10 grand right now in my current job. If I were to succeed at Chamberlain, in about 2 years (I'm almost done with all non-nursing courses for their curriculum) I would make about 50 grand. It would be a night and day change in my income, given I succeed. For me, I feel it is more worth it than others, given my current limitations in acceptance. I did really well in my program. I just need to get my learning and anxiety issues taken care of. I have to make every step from now on count more than before. If all else fails, nursing isn't the only thing out there. I just truly love nursing. Hopefully God works His miracles for me in 2017. Thank you for your advice. I will keep it all in mind :)

My goodness! I would not pay that much money for a degree.

My advice in short would be to not get involved with the for-profits. They are the last resort of the desperate and ill-prepared.

If this thread is legitimate I don't understand your academic fall from grace. All the indicators for success were in place.

But I do have the sneaking suspicion that this thread may have been created from somebody, perhaps an academic advisor, looking for recruits to sell somebody expensive loans.

NeoNatMom,

I attend Chamberlain in Atlanta, and asides from the cost, it is actually a great school. Just because it is for profit doesn't mean that you are not getting a quality education, it just means they are not getting funding from the government like public schools. Most of the people that I know that have graduated get jobs at every great hospital here in Atlanta, and we also have clinicals at every one of them. The classes have great teacher, but they come with their challenges meaning they are not easy. So just think about it, but don't let the "for profit" have you thinking that it's not a great school. I'm currently a senior in critical care with 3 more classes left!

Wow, that's good to know. I understand what you mean. I am gonna try for Athens Tech and apply for next fall entry. If in the end it doesn't work out I will be going to Chamberlain for sure. Thanks for the insights

How did it go?
