Discrimination against online degrees?

I posted on another thread that I was thinking about finishing a bachelor's online so I could apply to an accelerated BSN program. Another poster commented that the BSN program might not look too kindly on an online degree and I wouldn't have an easy time getting accepted. I plan on doing the required pre-reqs at a local school and just the other assorted junk online. Will I suffer from not having a "traditional" degree if I try to get in a competitive program?

There are virtually 100's of thousands of online programs. 99% of universities have them. They are enormously popular. I wouldn't listen to what that person is telling you. They don't have a clue.

Simply ASK the dean's office of the Accel BSN programs you are considering applying to. . .

It doesn't hurt to ask, and they will probably be honest with you. After all, it does them no good to be clogged up with applications they wouldn't want to accept. In any case, I suspect most programs are interested in arming candidates with the correct information for them to be competitive.

I suspect that if the degree is from a reputable program, it wouldn't be a problem.

Bottom line: if you have concerns, it's best to directly address those concerns before you spend the time, effort, and money in that direction.

I called the school. They told me that they don't discriminate based on where you got your degree. Their most important criteria is how well you did in the required pre-reqs (Which I'm not taking online.) So I think I'm safe. Whew!

If you haven't already done it, I would check with your BON to make sure they accept the online degree or the school's opinion is a moot point. Our BON is having issues with Excelsior right now so that would make me be extra cautious. Good luck.

I don't see why the BON should care where I got my bachelor's since it's not nursing related anyway. I'm talking about an accelerated BA-BSN course. All nursing courses are taken in a "real" nursing school, but to be admitted you need to have a BA in anything, from anywhere, and have completed the nursing pre-reqs.
