discrimination in the nursing field

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

hi everyone, am a new lpn nurse, got my license in august, been applying for jobs here and there, taking quizzes etc, but what bothers me so much is the discrimination involved in this field. as nurses we are all meant to work together to achieve a common goal which is caring for the patient and ensuring their safety, but its frustrating to realize that every where you turn, the door is closed against you and all you hear is" we are only hiring RN's and BSN holders"

since the system know that all these will occur, why did they start the lpn program, make you go through a lot of hell in nursing school, sacrificing so much in order to get to where you are but at the end you can't get a job.omg! don't get me wrong, lpn program is good in the sense that you learn a lot and more over, it has paved way for many nurses that has reached a better position on the ladder,it provides for families and pays the bills but why is it so hard getting jobs?

i will keep studying and continue to look forward to a testimony

the unfortunate truth is RIGHT NOW THERE DOES NOT EXIST a nursing shortage, it has in fact been decades.....

also economy , etc you are seeing older nurses as myself, working longer, that you would observe several decades ago.

thanks everyone, may be i didn't use the right word, but you know its just very frustrating, especially when am being asked for a year or more experience, when no one is giving me a chance.

RN/BSN grads are having the same issue in many areas of the country....there is no nursing shortage. If you are applying to acute care facilities...there are very few that hire LPN's anymore whether they have expereince or not.

Have you tried a LTACH? Long Term Acute Care Facility like the ones Kindred have? That would be an area that has acute medical patients with multiple co-morbidities and complications that lead to extended hospital stays...so they are transferred to the LTACH.

I wish you the best.

I have been an LPN for 33yrs. I have never had a problem finding work in medical clinics.....until I moved to a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska. I have sent numerous resumes to various clinics and have been turned down from all of them. One clinic said I was "over qualified"! I found out from a friend that works at that particular clinic that the real reason was "we can hire an MA cheaper than and LPN". One clinic only hires Xray techs, and are taught how to work back office, give injections, dispense meds etc. So I was turned down at that clinic. Also I have been told by another clinic that if I had a Limited Xray Certificate I would have a better chance. I have since found a job at the Veterans home, as here in Nebraska the only places hiring LPNs are Nursing homes. So...in my opinion....yes, we are being phased out..unless you want to work in a nursing home, assisted living etc.
