Disaster of 1st day of RN program

Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone! (Hugs all around.) Well I'm writing from the swamp of homeworkland, ughhhh, I never REALLY thought it would be this hard. You guys warned me, but this has been a rough week!

Day one 8/19:

Dog ran away in AM, (thank god was found and was able to retrieve her before school, but didn't get to school as early as I'd planned.)

I wear slacks w/ "sensible" shoes (not my normal slouchy, comfy shorts, scrubs, jeans, etc.) to try and make a good first impression. Go to the bathroom just before school starts, Zipper breaks on slacks. No one around has safety pin (that is, none of the all-of-about-4 people-I-know-in-the-nursing-program-so-far)

CRITICAL THINKING at its best (are you guys SICK TO DEATH of hearing that buzzword at school yet?) I borrow a stapler and staple my pants shut. Pull shirt over pants (thank god for long shirts) go to class. Now I'm late (BIG, BIG deal at my school - they lock you out normally but it was first day so they just gave me that withering look - you know the one  ).

First break, I come back, put soda on desk. Little blond in front of me (has she REALLY graduated from high school and been in college long enough to finish the pre-reqs???) turns around and knocks soda over as she passes me a paper. Soda all over desk, notes, binder, handouts, and of course, all over me. Sitting in puddle of soda, now look like I peed my pants, oh excuse me,"VOIDED". I say to blond "can you get me some paper towels," after all, she knocked it over, right? She says, "you want ME to get some paper towels?" I say, yes, I have soda all down my front (scrambling to save precious notes/handouts). Get this, she says, "where do I get them????" I say, "in the bathroom" and try not to look at her like "you idiot". She turns back to her paper, finishes filling out her survey (I'm still sitting in soda puddle), then, as I'm getting up to get them myself, she finally goes to get some. I clean up mess (get no help from blondie who seems put out that she had to get the towels), and wonder without saying it out loud what the heck else can go wrong.

Made it through the rest of the day w/o incident, thank god. I have 1 nice instructor (who writes very hard test questions I hear) and two demons posing as nursing instructors. (I keep waiting for their heads to spin around in the middle of lecture.) I want to scream "Who are you and what have you done to my teacher???" But I sink a little lower in my chair and try to write faster.

My new motto for nursing school is KMS, for Keep Mouth Shut. (Obviously hard for yours truly).

So any other first day stories? I could use the humor!!!

I'll keep you posted though!

Cheryl R.

cheryl please excuse me for lol.. cause i feel bad all that happend to you :chuckle

i think you had the day from he--

;)

Thanks for your encouragement, guys, I knew I could count on you (besides you all probably really needed that laugh!)

Good news is I'm on week 2 now, aced my first unit exam on Monday w/ a 92%, and drew the best of the three clinical instructors, so it's better than the start for sure!

Thanks again,

Cheryl

Before you finnish your program I gaurantee you will understand the expression "nurses eat their young"

Just wanted to share...I have since graduated, but my 1st day of clinicals I got stuck in the elevator (with another student) at the hospital coming back from lunch...when I used the emergency phone in the elevator I made them call my instructor FIRST because she had impressed upon us that if we were late we were OUT...it took 2 hours to get us out and my student buddy was claustrophobic...whew!

(((Cheryl))) I'm so sorry! See my "Define Irony" post...It explains my first week experience for my CNA class.

I guess that if there are angels among us...there must be demons too! :D I know I've met a few in my time!...Aliens as well...they HAVE to be!! Keep your chin up though and next time try to dump your drink on her! hehehehehehe

My first day was monday. I had an ok day untill I was going home from school at 9:30 pm and my car Broke down. Dad came out to look at it. Was out till 11:30. Had to meet the tow truck driver at 5:30 am Tuesday. Tues night in Speech class, some annoying 18 yr old guy spent his 15 min into telling everyone how much he enjoyed Relieving himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I paid for this Class!!!geeeez! Today was great! I had A and P, my teacher rocks....I am excited its over for this week!!!! I made it through the first week!

So CRAFF1 I understand!!!

PS My car is fixed now!! Heating core!!

Cheryl,

I'm sorry about your first day. On my first day of nursing school (actually it was the orientation the day before school started), I spilled tea on myself, my desk, and the floor while one of the teachers was talking. I didn't know anyone in the class, but luckily people around me were helpful. As I got to know my classmates, they'd say, "I remember you, you're the one who spilled on the first day." :chair:

I agree with everyone on the dismal future of blondie who wouldn't help you. Nursing=helping and caring She doesn't seem willing to do either of those.

I'm glad to hear things have been going better. Keep up the good work!

I had Orientation yesterday and man....you were not lying about stupid people. We spent hours going over our e-mail access,YAWN, and how to access the online Library, Yawn. These things are sooooooo self explanitory. They should make it an optional workshop. I ended up showing up late because I read to be there between 8:15am and 9:30 to check in. So I showed up at 8:45am to "check in" and of course everyone has been there since 8:15am listening to speakers. Uggggggh! Walking in late is so embarassing. Then there are the personality types that I conflict with that I would choke if I were a pt. My brain was so sore that night!

We had to take this Safety class, in addition to the all day library class. There are now online NURSING classes. Wahhhh.....but of course I had to drive 69 miles a day to go to them....

:) but I passed :) you'll get through it....

Cheryl...you had what I call a "George Costanza Day". I have them so often its now a game with me. In my head I'll start adding up the things that've happened so I can go home and relate them to my daughter, who laughs and laughs when I tell her "I had another of my George Costanza days!" Don't know if you ever watched Seinfeld, but that guy was always getting himself into predicaments that made him look worse and worse.

I don't know why nursing instructors seem to lack the "caring attitude" they keep preaching!

I've been out of school almost 3 years now and I still am not clear about the "critical thinking" thing. I mean...doesn't everyone have to THINK?

:kiss Cheryl, Cheryl, Cheryl! You make me laugh! I hope you found a tremendous amount of humor in all of that! It simply must mean that since blondie doesn't know where to find paper towels we can be assured that she probably wont be sticking around too long and it also must mean that you are going to have a wonderful experience in nursing school--I mean except for the demons for teachers  -

Good luck to you! I am sure you will have better days!

Now watch--I bet by the time you graduate Blondie will be your best good friend!!
