are "fake nails" okay for nurses?

Why do you want to wear something that risks the lives of you and your patients? To look good? Do you really want to bring home all that bacteria? Whats wrong with you?

I lost my car then my home

Gordi- My hisband left me over my dream of becoming a nurse. I lost my house, my boat, my job-everything. My husband did some nasty things to destroy our credit rating so I didnt qualify for student loans and had to declare bankruptcy after discovering that he had run up a $37000 debt during my first semester of school (Id just left him) I struggled alot. Half the time I had nothing to eat, I slept in my car for a week etc etc etc. The last 4 years were the hardest of my life. I just finnished nursing school last month. I graduated with the highest comprehensive exam mark in the school and I just landed a full time job in the burn/trauma unit. I love it!!!!!!!!! My advice to you is that if you have a dream dont let anything get in your way. Put on blinders and focus. Damn everything else. Become obsessed! If you dont go thru the hard times to pull it off you will spend a lifetime experiencing "what ifs" "could haves" and "only ifs" Trust me, this is not any way to live life. In the end you will have your dream and be fulfilled. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is failing at your school?

You guys get it easy-try 4 12 hour shifts this week, 3 12 hour shifts next week, 5 12 hour shifts the week after-repeat x3. Talk about tired!

    Uniform policies?

Every nursing school uniform is hideous. Grin and deal with it. Have a uniform burning party when you finnish!

May grads, how are you studying for NCLEX?

Our finals (NCLEX)were much more difficult then any of the sample tests in Mosbys. Everyone in my school that just reviewed the NCLEX books like Mosbys either failed the exam or came really close to it. I suggest you review your modules several times. Its alot of work but it will gaurantee you success. The NCLEX books are very vague compared to the exams. They dont have enough detail on the disease process, patho, specific med side effects etc. You need a broader knowledge base to pass then what is in those books. They are a big waste of money! Good luck- 52% of our graduating class failed the test on April 15th. They are brutal. Study hard!

    Complaints against a school

Okay-get a load of this. In my first 7 weeks of schhol we spent our clinical time in lab reviewing things like how to assess vital signs, perform bed baths, make a bed etc. Prior to going out on the floor a teacher told me she would get me to quit if it was the last thing she ever did. She said I wasnt "nursing material". She thought I would be abusive to patients (direct quote) I was freaked out. She had never seen or observed me interacting with patients or conducting patient care as we had not yet gotten to that point in our program. When I got to clinical she through a wheelchair at my hip full force and left a beautiful bruise because I wasnt moving fast enough. (Now whos abusive) She would belittle me in front of patients and their families telling them how stupid I was. When she saw my exam marks (90s) she asked me who I copied off of. I just wrote my finals and passed with the highest mark in the school. All my clinical teachers after this witch praised ny patient interactions and interpersonal skills. I have recieved rewards for my patient care. Dont give up!!!!!!! It is in my opinion that some of these profs are emotionally or psychologically disturbed (re: personality disorders) It is my opinion that they choose to teach because they dont get along well in the nursing world. If this witch was that cruel to me - how did she treat her patients when she was actively practicing? Scary! Keep your nose to the grindstone-do your best-and @#$ the nuts that try to get in your way. They have the compassion, empathy and personality of a brussel sprout-. Consider it a learning experience on how to deal with abusive personalities. It will come in handy one day. Everything is a learning expereince!

Any nursging Schools affected by SARS

Graduating students here in Hamilton have been forewarned that if the outbreak continues pregrad placements will be cancelled. Dont know what they plan to do with us. Putting us in holding pattern wont work because they cant place the amount of students they have now, never mind placing us at the same time as the ones coming up behind us. We have been assured that pregrad placements have a priority over 2nd and 3rd year students, but still-

    Flattering/Stylish uniforms

The word "uniform" alone describes a lack of style or creativity. I suggest you give it up

    Sars

Im about to go into my pregrad in 2 weeks. I work at an AIDS hospice on the weekends. This SARS thing has made me take leave of absence once pregrad starts. I have no other way of supporting myself. I already have to go to the foodbank once in a while. I have no idea how Im going to manage financially or if Im even going to be able to finnish school. Ive appiled for some waitress jobs but as soon as they discover you work in a hospital they dont want to hire you in case your infected.

    'Borderline' students?

Hmm- I know a student who got perfect on a couple of her exams and scored 90s on all the others. In pregrad she couldnt dispense meds to more than 2 patients and wound up double dosing a patient on digitalis! Is this who you want taking care of you or your loved ones? The scary thing is that they puther in emerg for the last half of her pregrad because her marks were so high. Heaven forbid anyone else gets hurt. How can you manage the fast paced load of emerg if you cant even dispense meds for 2 patients. Im thinking our university is not putting safety first. Shouldnt the students with glowing clinical reports get priority in hi risk fast paced enviorments?
  15. men get very threatened when they feel they are losing control. A well educated woman with good earning potential screams independence. If men cant be supportive of a womans decisions to improve her own lot in life they need to do some self reflecting on why. Dont give up your dream. If your husband cant be supportive (and see the benefits he will reap) %$#@*% him. Men are like buses- theres always another one just down the street! Life is short-dont sell out!

Quit nursing school due to head games.

Hi Im so sorry you dropped out but I totally understand why. Im about to finnish but this has been the most abusive experience of my life. Wheel chairs thrown at me (left a beauty bruise) verbal insults screamed down the hallways of the ward I was co-oping on, interviews that were an act of public humiliation. Ive struggled so hard to get thru my program without going postal. At 40 years old I walked away from a marriage, a house, a boat and my life saving to attain this goal and at every step Ive encountered a psychotic nut as a teacher (although some were good) The expression "nurses eat their young" was engrained into me from the very beginning. All I can tell you is that if you want something bad enough-hold your head high and screw them all-this is for you @#&%$! them!!!!!!! The one thing that scares me though is that these people are licensed to care for the vulnerable patients we deal with-this is terrifying!!! Should they not have a personality test or review to determine that the insane are not allowed to nurse or teach? I empathize with people that are sociopathic and narcisistic but I dont think that nursing is a profession they belong in!!!!!!
