Disappointed about nursing school :(

Ive been so exicted about going to our public university. :) I got the financial aid I needed and I had great grades in high school, but I cant be admitted b/c I havent had two years of foreign language. :( My high school didnt even have foreign language classes. LOL. I was so looking forward to getting a BSN. Now it seems like my only option is to go to a "career" college and get my LPN (only takes a year) but its $16000.

My question is after I get my LPN can I go to a public university and get my BSN even if I havent had a foreign language class?

how about taking the foreign language at the college?

Or finding another school that doesn't require foreign language.

BTW, $16000 sounds rediculous for an LPN, it may be that way, but I will only pay $5000 for my ADN including books for 2 years. And my school offers an LPN program that I think only costs $4000 for one year.

Yeah it sounds CRAZY to pay that much and I dont really want to. What kind of school do you go to?

The university that I will apply to, (U of IOWA) requires foreign language, statitics and a Writing class that I need to take before I can be considered for acceptance.

Why don't you finish getting your LPN, then take your required foreign languages and see if you can bridge over from LPN-BSN or find a C.C that has an articulation (classes that transfer) agreement with your University. You could always bridge from LPN-ADN-BSN.

Did you mean your LPN School will cost 16,000.00?

My first year in my ADN program is only $5400.00 (second year is slightly cheaper but i will pay no more than $10,000 for the total program)

Is this a BSN program? Can't you take the language classes while you are in the early part of the program? (I know, in your spare time, right? LOL)

Definitely talk to the admissions office at the school you wanted to go to. Explain the situation (that foreign language classes weren't available to you) and ask what specifically you need to do in order to meet their requirements. Perhaps they can grant you a waiver or lower the requirement or let you meet it by taking a summer class or two. They are the ones who can best answer your question (and bug them until you get the answer!). Good luck.

Apply as another major or undecided or biology major and take the preq.'s for nursing and the language courses required and then apply to their nursing school or another BSN program.

I understand your problem as I kinda have the same one. 2 years of high school or 8 college credits of foreign language are a requirement for admission to the university (not to the nursing program/school).

I was/am looking at an upper level BSN transfer. I asked an advisor about it and he said I would be required to complete the foreign language requirement before graduation of the BSN. Bottom line....they do make exceptions!

I pay not considerably more than that for my masters in nursing! Wowee thats expensive!

Why not apply to the university that you want to go to and insead of applying to the nursing school right away just go in as undeclared...for your first semester of college take a foreign language class? Are the foreign language classes a requirement of the nursing college or the whole university in general. At all the colleges and universities that I have been to, first you must be admitted into the univeristy as a whole then when you decide what you want to major in then you apply to that program within the university...if you are pursuing your BSN at a large university you wouldnt apply to your major your first quarter/semester anyway...you would need to take the general prereqs before...

At Ohio State, you would be admitted into the univeristy without foreign language but if you were, then you were required to take them at the univ level...if you had taken them in HS then you would take a placement test and depending on how you did you could test out.

Oh, and I think the LPN is a bad choice for you. Price aside, it will NOT transfer to the university. You would have to first bridge to an ADN. However, there's alot of prerequisites you would have to complete first and probably some different ones for the RN to BSN at the university as well. It will take you FAR longer to go this route than if you just outright took 2 semesters of 4 credit college language.

Talk to an advisor at the university. They may let you in without it anyway.

I would recommend a community college to start pre-reqs and get your two years or equivalent foreign language....it will cut down on cost to go to a community college first. Then once you have the required language, statitics and writing then reapply to the university..unless you can get the university to let to start there and do college level foreign language during your first year.

They usually just make you take the courses - but they wont keep you out altogether!

Take them online through the distance ed program - Texas tech and University of Texas in Austin both have online foreign language courses and they are pretty affordable!

AND they transfer for university credit!

Your first step tho should be to talk to an advisor - I wouldnt do ANYTHING untilo I did that!!!!!!
