Dirty Shame!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

St Francis nursing school is closing for financial reasons. For a Century this fine nursing school has turned out many, many excellent nurses. I know I have worked with them. While the politician and CEOs talk about "the nursing shortage", they continue to follow economic policies that make the situation worse. I feel like a old friend is dying.:scrying:

Unfortunately it's not just a PA problem. Syracuse University is shutting it's doors to the nursing program. Last class will finish this Fall (2002) and any remaining students will be assisted to other programs. It's a shame. I received my post graduate NP certificate there- great education.

There is always something profoundly sad about a school closing, more so if it is one you attended.

Bottom line (and it is always the bottom line) nursing programs are expensive. In the face of a shortage of nurses such as has not been seen before, it is tragic for any program to close. But the alternatives seem to be pretty bad, too. Cut back on the resources for the program? Cut back on faculty? Charge more?

At the risk of being a bit trite, it is time for everyone to think outside the box, esp. the people holding the money. Risky, but desperate times require desperate measures. Maybe it's time to look to nursing history and see what solutions were implemented when it was imperative nurses be trained efficiently and well.
