2014 Direct Entry MSN Applicants/Survivors

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Admittedly, this is a bit early, but I'm planning on applying 2013 Fall for next year and was wondering if anyone else here is? Or if anyone here is in a direct entry MSN program and wouldn't mind answering some questions?

I am hoping to do CNM

Thank you

Emily

Hi Kdiem,

Great advice! I just started cold-emailing doulas in my area (DC) to see if they allow shadowing. Unfortunately, there are only 3 birth centers in my area, and two said 'no'- one was booked with interns until 2014! Still waiting to hear back from the other one. I'm hoping an independent doula will take pity on me and let me attend. How did you break into that world??

Hi legalnurse 2 b and everyone...I'm wondering which hospital you are volunteering at, and or if you can recommend good places to volunteer in the East Bay or SF. I am particularly interested in Women and childrens health, L and D, and palliative care. Thank you!

Did anyone take a stats class online that they would recommend? Thank you!

KP- I took online stats through the Community College of Denver and aced it. Now, I had taken stats 3 times in person before, so it wasn't as difficult as it could have been. I was actually able to catch an error the prof made by using the wrong number from a table. Overall, it wasn't that bad of a course to take online - I've been very successful with other online courses, so maybe it just played into my learning style better than sitting in a classroom.

I went through UC Berkeley extension and it was great- informative but not too hard. Definitely makes you work, but the nice thing is that it is self-paced.

Kdiem- I can't pm yet, but wanted to thank you for yours! I looked into doula programs near me and just got an interview to become an intern at a birthing center. Excited and hopeful that they give me a chance (considering I have no experience and am just a part-time student I am realistic about my chances, but still- excited!)

Has anyone registered for summer classes yet? I have to wait until May 1 :(

Specializes in Mental Health.

I'm taking both A&P2 and Microbiology this summer. It'll be so much fun! :-[

Well, just heard that I was not selected for an internship with the birthing center. feeling pretty low- it seems like no matter how hard I try to get a break into the medical field, it just isn't happening for me.

Hi Emily, I'm applying for the same thing, anyone feel free to PM me with suggestions on schools to apply to in CA...right now i'm trying to decide if it's even worth it to apply to the Masters-entry at UCSF, UCLA or University of SF, given that they're "top" schools or just apply to "safety" schools that are the expensive private ones...I hate how there's no centralized application, how do you ask your reccomenders to write 4 or 5 letters?? =/

Hi all - I was wondering if you all could give me some advice. My ultimate goal is to be a NP and I will apply to Direct Entry programs this fall. I am graduating from undergrad in May 2014 with a degree in Public Health. I have experience studying healthcare abroad, I've interned for a public health organization for the past year, and plan to shadow a NP this fall. Currently I have a 3.4GPA. I am still working on finishing the prerequisites - I will be taking Statistics in the fall and will most likely take A&P and Microbiology in the summer of 2014 (I don't have room in my schedule to take them in the Spring). I'm planning on applying to Direct Entry programs at Northeastern, Columbia, Vanderbilt, Emory, MGH Institute, Pace, and Marquette. Do you all think that my lack of prerequisites completed will hinder my application? Is it worth it to give it a try and apply this year? Any advice is appreciated - there is no nursing program at my college and my pre-health advisor has very little knowledge on direct entry nursing programs, so I am pretty much all alone here.

Thank you to whoever started this post. One of my friends already in the Direct Entry program at Vanderbilt told me to sign up for this and chat up the people applying to the same programs as me!

I've finished applying to all the programs I'm applying to! YAY! It feels good to be done with them. Everybody loves stats, so here are mine: I finished my last pre-req in October and ended up with a 4.0 in pre-reqs. I had a 3.3 GPA in undergrad with a BS in Biology and 157V, 159Q, 4.5W on the GRE. I've been working in research for the last three years studying delirium in the ICU and ARDS in pulmonary patients. I applied to Univ of Alabama Birmingham, UCSF, Boston College, Emory, , and Yale. I already received my acceptance to UAB, but I decided to turn it down because ultimately the program for direct entry was too long and I wasn't sure I really wanted to live in Birmingham.

So, Let me know how many more of you out there are applying to these schools and who's excited to hear back from Yale next week?!
