direct entry bsn/msn in nurse anesthesia??

Nursing Students SRNA

i just graduated with a BA and all nursing prereqs and i am looking for direct entry programs where i could earn a bsn and then msn in nurse anesthesia. i am currently looking at columbia's program but would like to find other options due to the competitiveness. does anyone know of other such programs ON THE EAST COAST?

Georgetown is the other program that will allow you to do this. I am sure it is really competitive and very expensive. I also looked at Columbia's ETP program, but 80,000 dollars just to get a BSN is just too much. That does not even count the cost for the MSN portion. A lot of schools have an accelerated BSN program and an MS in anesthesia. Good luck to you....

To my knowlege there is no direct entry to any CRNA program in the US. even the one at columbia has some caveats as far as entry into the program that do not make it a direct entry in the true sense. The specialty is unique in nursing both in practice and in educational requirements. For example, Georgetown University is a leader in direct entry into advanced practice, but you still have to traditionally apply to the CRNA program. Make yourself a good candidate (numerous other threads address this subject) and you can get in on one application cycle after a year of critical care experience, but no COA accredited program can have a true direct entry program for crna.

The program at Columbia does offer direct entry. You do the first year of the BSN, work for a year in the ICU, and go into the nurse anesthetist program after that year. It is not direct entry in that you don't have to work in the ICU, it's just means there is already a spot for you in the anesthesia program after you have finished that year of ICU nursing, no second application process needed. I wish that was the route that I could take, but it is way too expensive.

Please read the sticky and see AANA requirements. There is no "direct" entry into CRNA programs.

i understand that these are not "true" direct entry programs and that all crna programs will require you to work for at least a year first, but i am looking for programs where you can get accepted into the anesthesia program along with the bsn part so that you are gauranteed a spot after that year of work and do not need to start applying again.

Hey Coopsc1,

If nursing is what you really want to do, then definitely go for the accelerated BSN programs. And, if CRNA is your eventual goal, then the best of luck to you. I, myself, just graduated from Columbia's ETP program and recently was hired on a cardiac ICU. after this year, I'll be heading back to start the anesthesia didactics. I was fortunate to be one of the five to be admitted directly, the ETP/CRNA route. The info you have is correct, Columbia requires you to work for a yr in ICU after the BSN, then you go back for CRNA. However, the school doesn't help you with finding jobs...it's not too hard, but you have to be persistent in your search. The school does offer scholarships and tuition is not $80k, more like around $56k. The CRNA program has a new director and they are preparing for the accreditation in 2008, so some reqs might have changed and more competitve than it has been, so make sure to be updated. if any questions, feel free to pm me. take care, and best of luck!

Hi NYCacoustic,

I was just accepted to the Columbia ETP/CRNA program for 2009. Can you help answer some questions for me? After the 1 year BSN, you work in the ICU for a year, during this time do you get paid for working in the hospital or do you have to pay for tuition? What did you think of the program overall? Is it better to do the BSN/MSN direct route? I started the BSN only at NYU and need to figure out if I should quit and transfer to Columbia. Thanks

Hi Tipani,

I see that you were recently accepted into Columbia's EPT/CRNA program. Congratulations!

Would you mind sharing your stats? They do this on "student doctor network" and it gives prospective applicants an idea on who is getting accepted.

Columbia is my first choice and I am in the process of finishing up my pre-reqs now. But it would be nice to know what credentials they are really looking for.

Do you have direct patient care experience?

Did you shadow any CRNA's?

What was you science GPA?

what sciences did you take? Do you have more than the minimum requirement?

Thanks for any info you are willing to provide - I am trying my hardest to get into this program.

The only thing I could really tell you is to focus on your recommendation letters and your personal statement. I did not have previous patient care experience, or shadowed a CRNA, I took only the courses listed as required a

I was doing some research on Georgetown because I am thinking of applying there. I just want to point out that even though they do have a direct entry program for many specialties, they specifically DO NOT have a direct entry CRNA program. They only have direct entry programs for acute care NP, acute and critical care CNS, family NP, and nurse education.

Hi tipani77,

I have a similar situation to you and wanted to apply to the ETP/CRNA program at Columbia. I am in the middle of the semester at NYU. I didn't know that it was a possiblity to make such a transfer? Was this hard to do? How was the process like, taking the GRE, getting rec letters, and personal statement all within a short period of time? I would appreciate any advice or information you can give me. Thanks!
