Yeah, I had to take the PBDS for the second time and its a pain in the b...
Its a waist of time because when the education guy talks to our preceptor they don't really care. All that matters is that you work hard on the floor and take care of your patients.

No, and thank God!
Do you ask if they use this test during the interview? Do they mention it? I hear it's a pain in the rear to take it...

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a PBDS test? What does the acronym stand for?
I had to take a test during classroom orientation that covered drug calcs (conversions, drip factors, etc) as well as general drug knowledge, but that was it.

Well, I guess I missed the discussion (it's a pretty big website!) but thanks for telling me what the acronym is. Maybe someone will be willing to tell me more about it?
didnt mean that to seem "short"......was searching for threads.....the search function here is not what i am used to.......search under the phrase, not PBDS....and you will find some.....if i remember correctly, not many were happy with this test
Ah, thank you :)
I'm always interested by standardized testing, and haven't seen this one before. Will look into it!

Get used to having to prove competency. You will have to attend skills fairs, inservices, etc. because the hospital has to maintain proof of competency. Just because you have a license doesn't mean you are competent.
oh, i thought that is what CEU's were for.....or do you work in a state that doesnt, yet, require them?......are you familiar with this particular test, the last time it was discussed, it seemed very medical oriented not nursing
No, I've never heard of the exam. The hospitals around here offer CEUs that are webbased and we are required to do them, but the hospital also has required inservices and skills fairs on a regular basis where we must show competency.

Our hospital uses PBDS. We took the med-surg portion as a large group during our first week of orientation. Results were reviewed individually with our specific educators a few weeks later. Last week, I took the critical care PBDS and again reviewed with my educator. She says she sometimes assigns homework to nurses who showed room for improvement, but I don't know what this homework consists of as she's been satisfied with mine. The critical care test seemed more applicable and practical than did the med-surg, as it dealt more with things I would be likely to see. Some of the scenarios on this one were AMI, ventilator-acquired pneumonia, ETT obstruction, sepsis, and shock. I don't think PBDS is a horrible growth tool (and I say that only AFTER I've finished taking it!) but I don't think it's fair that many hospitals will base hiring/firing decisions on it.
