Did Not Pass Boards And Cannot Find Job.

I am a California resident. I took the boards in February and did not pass. Unfortunately I did not become an IP first. I know this would have almost garunteed me a position as a nurse tech or something of that nature. I am currently studying for the boards again, and I NEED A JOB! I am not in a situation where I can be jobless. I am specifically looking for something part time so that I can study, too. I am finding myself waiting in long lines to fill out applications and hearing things like, "we aren't hiring right now," "we will call you back in 4 weeks if there is anything available," or "we just filled the position." I can't take it much longer. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing! Excuse me for whining, but doesn't that mean something? I mean, I know I cannot work as an RN yet, but come on! Am I alone in this?:crying2: :crying2:

I know in Michigan you only have to have 95 credits to work as a subsitute teacher with the schools. It's not nursing, but it's something. :) good luck to you.

IP = interim permit. It allows you to practice as an RN for 6 months without having your RN license. I think you are treated as a student nurse, WHICH IS GREAT, because you have pros helping you through everything, but you are getting paid really well. If you take your boards and do not pass, your IP license is taken, but most times you are placed as a tech nurse or nursing attendant or something of this nature.

what city do you live in?

i would guess that an interim permit would automatically be revoked upon failing boards. In every other state, the ability to practice as a GN - grad nurse is contingent upon passing the boards.

the interim part of that is in the interim between grad and taking the boards for the first time.

I agree w/ sub teaching - it's as part time as you want and the schedule would work around study.

you might try unit secretary - but i wouldn't personally do that in a facility you eventually wanted to work as an RN in.

You could try ER/ICU tech - they always like someone with some hands on skills. And that job would give you some hands on application that might help w/ NCLEX.

I know the vet school here loves RN trained nurses for the vet clinics - and you don't have to have a 'human' license for that.

Before nursing, I made good money delivering pizzas in a pinch

And xmas is coming up, a good seasonal job could tie you over without worrying about strings after xmas.

Good Luck,

yep IP is out. ok check this out. first, if you have been working apply for unemployment, you will get it because you lost your job to no fault of your own apply even if you have not worked. see how much you will get, it will make feel a little better to know something will be coming in. dont worry its not welfare. its your money taken from you already. not much paper work just a phone call will set it up. anyway depending on how much you get will lead you to your next move. i think here in cali you can get it for 6 monthsish. so if enough take a little break from the test, about one month. then start to study up. so from now target taking the boards again in 4 months or so. if not enough what kind of work have you done in the past and how far are you willing to travel? answer those last two questions after you call the unemployment and find out just what your benefits are.

.....never thought about that. I am currently working, but I cannot find a job that meets my needs. I need a part time job so that I can earn $ and have time to study. The only job I have been able to land is a full time, graveyard warehouse job. It's as if no one cares that I have a degree. I mean, I know that now days, bachelor's degrees are almost being viewed as high school diplomas, but that fact that I earned a degree should say something to these people I have been giving applications, resumes and phone calls to, right? I had to take a 2 week leave of assignment from my job to study for the NCLEX, because my only options were a leave of absence or continue working full time. i am going back tomorrow. :(

It's not that people don't care about your degree; it's more that your degree is largely useless without the license to go along with it. Do you have a waiting period before you can attempt boards again?

Like Charmcity, I'm wondering when you can take boards again? Is it usual to wait 8 months between attempts (asking because I honestly don't know.)
