Did you like being a CNA?

Published

I started my 1st CNA job at a hospital on a busy floor. I have an avg. of 13 patients on my shift, ranges from (10-16). I find it very difficult to time manage. I don't dislike the work itself, however I feel overwhelmed with how much work must get done, from washing, turning patients, to moving them, charting, vitals, etc....There really is no time to do anything else. I feel i could possibly make a mistake or injure my back with how the staffing ratio's are done. If it was like 5-8 patients that would be a more appropriate level in my opinion. How do current CNA's manage to handle this type of stress. I have to give all CNA's credit.

You're not thinking about acuity in your calculation. And I said that just because one situation is worse doesn't mean the other isn't bad.

How about instead of having a "who's got it worse" peeing contest, we figure out how to advocate for ourselves and for people who need care, and refuse to accept ratios like 50:1. If no one consented to work in those conditions, they couldn't exist. Plus, I think that the public needs to know more. I think anyone who heard about a ratio like that would recognize it as insanity, and if we got the word out, things might change.

I had about five baratric patients, about 4 folks with strokes, 2 with hiv and the rest were demented. The whole BS comment about refusing to take that assignment, you lose your job if you don't(I did quit because the place was just a prison with pills).

Stop making assumptions about me and my experience. 13 is a piece of cake. Assuming the overall population was demented, acuity was considered.

I win the passing contest by the way

I didn't make any assumptions about you. You're the one who attacked me.

No, 13 is not necessarily a piece of cake.

And yes, I would refuse that assignment, and lose my job. I'm not capable of caring for 50 people and would never pretend I was.

You may win the contest, but I don't have pee on my shoes from trying.

1. i did quit cause it was just a mess and too much for the hours i was expected to work

2. 13 is a normal and quite easy once you get a routine

3.i never attacked you

this whole back and forth stuff i could do without. i work 50 hours a week , go to school for 35..... im here to unload stress not promote it. *ehug*

I love my residents, but am having a hard time w everything else. Please don't bash me. I have 15 residents, mainly by myself. I have the majority of dementia /Alzheimer's. Some have CHF, COPD and other issues. I have to clean 15 rooms including mopping and vacuuming, laundry, getting meals prepped among others.

This facility doesn't have housekeeping or dietary?

i wont be mopping nothing or vacuuming...... i hope they paying you over 20 dollars :-0

No. They have some one make the meals and the I have to plate them. We don't have housekeeping either. I knew some housekeeping was part of the job description, but seriously! I get paid minimum wage.

Holy crap dear, find another job! Is this a group home or something? Just wondering so I don't accidentally stumble into your job.....

Assisted Living Facility

thats how they get ya!

with a ALF they can give you a huge ratio because "the patients just need minimum help and pretty much do everything themselves" which is BS. My first ALF job when i was 18 had nursing home patients without a hoyer lift or even a nurse :(

Sorry Kadeemb, but you are acting like part of the problem. This isn't a bragging contest to see who is the super CNA. That's great YOU think 13-16 acute care hospital patients is no biggie for you. Come spend a few shifts where I work and you will probably see differently.

That you think anything less than 50 people is no biggie is your opinion I guess. Im sure some of these unit managers I spoke of would LOVE you, at least until you got a patient killed or the hospital sued while taking care of your "easy" assignment of 15 patients, a couple of whom inevitably SHOULD be in a critical care unit with one to one care, but aren't for whatever reason.

Where the hell do you see me saying 50 people is no biggie?

what i DID say was 13 wasnt a big deal and its quite normal.

maybe you should sharpen those reading comprehension skills of yours and read onward where i said i quit that horrible job.
