Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi,

I am a 50-yr-very-young (well, not really old) LVN student in Texas. I have a 4.0 grade average because I have worked extremely hard. My classmates are very young, just out of high school.

Today was the first day of our last semester. All of a sudden I was yanked out of class and called to the office. The director said I had missed too many hours (60 allowed for the year). Now, I know what days I have missed but his hen-scratched "record" was nowhere near correct. He told me to leave the building and decided what I wanted to do. "Do about what"? I don't know if I'm in school, out of school or what. I do know, however, that I cannot afford to miss school!

Has this ever happened to anyone else but me? I'm so so sad. There isn't anyone else at the school to talk to about this. Any thoughts?

Hi there litenurse. I really don't have any suggesions for you. I'm sorry to hear about your situation though. Have you tried posting in the general nursing discussion forum? You may get more answers there.

I would go back in with your record of the dates that you've missed and try to discover the reason for the discrepancy. If you're a 4.0 student, I'd also say something like, "Here are the days that I was absent. I had missed as much class as that, I don't think I could have maintained the grades that I have."

There's obviously some mistake and I would approach it as such. Be polite and respectful and get the situation resolved. Try to get a copy of his record.

After you've done everything you can to resolve the situation, if push comes to shove and he tries to suspend or expel you, tell him that

you have no choice but to seek legal counsel. If his record is inaccurate, and you can demonstrate that, he's risking a lawsuit by punishing you for it.

Keep a positive attitude and disposition and I'm sure you can get it resolved amicably.

You will never know how much your message meant to me. After two days of non-stop-crying, now I'm crying because of the song you put in my heart.

I already did everything you suggested. I would have accepted any disciplinary action he desired (tho not warranted). I just wanted to stay in school. This is the very first time in my 50 years of life that I attempted to do something for me. And I absolutely love nursing. It is where I'm supposed to be, ya know? I am making an attempt to contact the president of the college (I'm a chicken but gotta go for it). But now I really will have missed so many days catching up would be almost impossible. Thinking of requesting transfer (with their help) to another school somewhere? Any ideas?

I will keep you posted.

I'm truly taken aback by the responses I have gotten. This isn't just a forum...this is a piece of Heaven....isn't it great when you feel God smiling!!

Litenurse, I'm glad you're feeling a little better.

I'm a little confused as the current status of your situation. From your first post it sounded like he was torqued off at you and wanted you to "decide what you wanted to do" but your second post makes it sound like he's kicked you out of the program.

If it's the latter then I would definitely go as far up the chain of command as you're able (you said that you're sure that he's wrong, correct?). I would also consider speaking to an attorney. It seems to me that the school's policies are a contract between you and them and that if you don't violate them that they can't kick you out. If he says that you've violated them but there's some legitimate question about that then it seems like you've got some grounds on which to push them.

By all means, keep us posted. I hope it all works out for you.

(I don't know about transferring. It seems like most programs aren't set up to receive transfers. You really need to get this worked out where you are, if at all possible.)

You may have some luck if you speak to the dean who is responsible for the nursing department. I would try that before going to the president.

If you are able to talk to someone in the next day or two, it shouldn't set you back too far to catch up. If this was the first day of the semester, students probably haven't even finished with add/drop.

Couple of questions that may shed light on the situation:

- How many hours do you estimate that you've actually missed?

- Any previous run-ins with the director that might have led to this?

I am sooo incredibly sorry you are going through such an ordeal. I would be WAITING in the President or Deans office first thing in the morning and tell them you aren't leaving until you are given an appointment, immediately, or you will wait until the Dean/President is not busy. Don't be afraid. Those people are in those positions to look out for you, the student. They are there to assist you in your academic life. Don't let them intimidate you, as you did NOTHING wrong. Tell them you feel an error had occurred regarding your attendance. I wouldn't necessarily say a certain person was responsible, just that an error occurred. Tell them you kept your own record of your attendance and show them. Bring up your 4.0, which as a 4.0 student myself, one cannot maintain a GPA like that unless they are dedicated and are present in classes.

One thing you CAN point out to the President or Dean is that BEFORE the person told you to leave, you had not missed too many days...You were told by a school official to leave and THAT made you have too many days missed. I would take this as far up the chain as I could...if resolution does not come I would transfer your classes to another school, so you can complete school. I would also, if things are not resolved, contact the local newspaper and or news reporter. Our local news has people who investigate things like this and they LOVE putting people in their places and looking out for the "Regular Joe." I do pray for your resolution and for peace in your heart.

Hi and thanks to everybody,

I went over the director's head to a town 70 miles from here and guess who was there? Yeah, you guessed it. So I was told to write to the Board of Appeals, which I did right on the spot. The only thing is, I was told the letter had to be addressed to my Director, addressed to his office (the same person and same address that told me to leave) but I did it anyway and handed it to my Director (ex-director) right there in his supervisor's office. He looked at me (and you can only imagine how he LOOKED at me) and said, "I'll get back to you in a couple of days or when I hear back from the Board".

So, now it's been over a week. No way to catch up and overcome all the zero's for missed tests, etc.

Does anyone know if any such board exists or how I can find out. My school won't tell me how I can get in touch with this so-call "Board" cause I thinking there's no such animal and I would just like to know if anything I have been told is true. I would like to believe "yes", but it doesn't appear to be, at this point, to me.

My school was a junor college and NOTHING is transferable anywhere. So, I will be starting all over. And that's OK. This school has already been in the newspapers about indiscresions. But it is a small town and the "true" story is anybody's guess. I read the stories but could not figured out what was going on, only that it involved the "Nursing" department. I just figured if I stayed out of the politics, kept my opinions to myself, and made the grades, whatever was going on couldn't effect (or is it affect?) my passing and getting my LVN license. Who would pick on an old lady just sitting there with her nose in the books, I thought. WRONG!

But, I'm super glad to have found this forum and all you caring people. So, maybe I need to send that guy a thank you letter for tossing me out on my behind! Otherwise, I would not have found this site and all of you. I definitely came out on the winning side of whatever his issue happens to be. I'm not the only one that has been treated this way by that school. I just never knew how to get in touch with any of them to find out.

So, enough of that, and on to the future. That's what I need ideas and suggestions about now. Not gonna waste any more energy and time on him or the school. Even though, yes, I have already consulted with a lawyer and he is itching for me to turn him loose on that school. Even offered to do it at no cost to me. And maybe I will just let him do that cause something is definitely wrong. But my first and only priority right now is becoming a nurse. So where do I have to move, what do I need to do to make that happen???!!! A 4-yr college degree is not in the cards. I need a school offering this accelerated program. Is that the correct terminology? When I call other schools, is that what I ask for (accelerated program)?

WOW, This is a mess indeed. I don't know what state you live in but I am in Florida. I go to an "accelerated" RN (Associates in Science degree) program. Start to finish it will take me 22 months (That includes all pre reqs), only 18 months if I had my pre reqs. There are accelerated LVN/LPN programs that are 9-11 months in length here as well.

Good luck to you and whatever you decide to do. If you do have to go to another school and do it all over again....on the bright side, you won't be struggling to get through like so many others...

Litenurse2b, I'm still stunned at what's happened to you. I keep wanting to say, "That just can't be," but of course, it is. It seems like that school and the director deserve to have the attorney turned loose on them.

Are you free to move anywhere you choose? If that's the case, I'd decide where you want to live and then try to get into a school in that area because it'll be easier to find a job there if you've gone to school there.

LVN programs out this way (Northern CA) don't seem to be impacted and the local one is a 12 month program.

Here's the good thing, I guess: Once you start into the right program, you're going to be a 4.0 student again, and probably with a lot less effort since you've already put in so much effort to get as far as you have.

You seem to have such a good attitude that you're certain to do well wherever you end up. Why all this has happened, who knows, but your attitude about it is inspiring.

All the best to you.

So kind of you to care. My daughter lives in St. Pete. I could just go to school on the beach! My plans are to be an RN and even further. Can you go into specialized fields with the accelerated programs?

Do you know?
