Describe it.

happy new years everyone!!!

i wanted to know, how do you personally describe your chosen profession to someone else, another nurse, or lay person.

i have not made my way *yet* to this wonderful profession, but getting there. i graduated high school in the spring of '06 with my cna license. i was more proud of being the valedictorian of my program and being one of less than 20 high school students in my county to graduate with my license, than i was of graduating high school.

to me, i find this difficult. how can one person's ultimate passion be described to someone else who doesn't share that passion. i don't think it can.

i believe that nursing is one of the hardest, most fulfilling, heart-breaking, ultimately rewarding professions out there.

to me, being a nurse is more than just a job.

also, it is not about the money. how can a person's heart felt educated attempts to give the best care possible be monetarily rated.

i think i could go on forever about my passion :)

I tell people that I am a nurse and I get lots of of questions especially those that know I did ER for 10 years. I never forget to tell people that ER nursing has given me such a respect for the fragility of life. It is not something that you should take for granted.

It's been my experience that so many people don't get it. When I was a CNA, I would tell these beautiful stories about my day, the way a patient looked at me, or something they said to me, & when I was finished, my audience members would simply say, "Yeah, but...I just don't know how you deal with having to change dirty diapers!":smackingf

So, apparently, I don't describe it very well;) .

I am about to start my first job at the NICU I did my senior practicum at. When I tell people I am a nurse and am going to work in the NICU, I take a breath so I can tell them of the wonders of the NICU, how much I love it. Somehow, during the breath, my audience members say, "oh, the NICU, I could never work there, it's so sad." The first few times I tried to describe the miracles you see everyday in NICU but people never get it, so I gave up. I just smile now when they say that.

i do nursing because i want to help people. i do nursing because of the challenge it gives. i enjoy the mix of advanced education with caring for a dying little lady who needs her hand held for a few moments as opposed to doing a painful procedure to her. i enjoy nursing because i can look at labs, hemodynamics etc... and see how they are doing, but i can also look at a pt's face and have empathy for their pain. i tell people that nursing is much more than bed pans and fallowing dr's order. nurses keep you alive. nurses catch dr's mistakes, nurses help interns through their icu rotation to become residents. nurses can make a dr's life he#@ or heaven.:nurse:
