Depressed and stressed because of final & nursing in general :(

Nurses Career Support

Published

Is nursing school reallllly worth it? I'm just finishing up my first semester of LPN school of nursing and I am going to take my final in fundamentals of nursing tomorrow. I'm seriously worried. I think the final is going to be sooo hard. I had 4 other exams and my scores weren't all that great, but still passed. What if I don't pass this last exam?....i'll fail and won't become what i always dreamed of becoming, a nurse! First of all, nursing school isn't what i thought it would be at all. I thought it would be more hands-on experience rather than in the book. I will NEVER remember everything from the book when (or if) i even graduate. There's just no way....some of those theory questions are so tricky. I think it's pointless. I think we should have more hands-on. That's when you learn the most anyway .... And i did have clinicals already, but i didn't learn much there either because we just did CNA work, which i already know how to do. I'm just really stressed out and i don't think i'll pass. If i don't, i'll be really upset with myself, but maybe this career isn't right for me. i guess we'll see. Please comment if you wish to. I'll try to keep my chin up but it's hard.... :(

If you've got an exam tomorrow it is only natural that you are stressed. It's always difficult to get the balance of theory to practical balance right.

Just try to relax, remember what you have been taught and do the best you can.

Just a little addition, yes I think nursing school was worth it, I struggled with the theory but am so glad I am a nurse now

Good luck and I'll be sending good thoughts your way

We all go through exactly what you're going through and we all somehow make it through. If you fail, you pick yourself up and try again. But that may not even happen. Instead of stressing over failure, do some deep breathing and relaxation exercises and keep on keeping on. Walk around the block and keep studying.

Keep in touch and let us know how it goes.

The truth is: Nursing school sucks. That you are stressed out is soooo normal, I can't tell you. That you feel that you aren't doing as well as you would like is also VERY normal. Nursing school is something to survive. I believe (IMHO) that the whole intention of nursing school is to weed out people who aren't going to be able to be compliant, take criticisms and survive the stress of being a nurse. There is very little hands-on. Nursing school is a lot like medical school, where it is mostly theoretical, unfortunately for nurses, our 'residency' equals 'new grad'.

I also believe that nursing school gives you very little exposure into what real nursing is like. Clinicals will give you a glimpse if you pay attention. The best advice I have for you is to quit listening to your thoughts and begin tuning into your intuition. Find the calm within yourself. Your intuition will be your best friend as you move forward and there is no doubt in my mind that successful nurses rely on intuition whether they are aware of it or not. That might be a strange thing to say, but give it a shot....and see what happens.

Good luck!! You can do it!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:

Thanks a ton for the encouragement deeDawntee! i SO agree with you on what you wrote! :) That is what i was trying to point out, that basically nursing school is pointless, because i've talked to other nurses and they said that you basically only learn about 10 percent in nursing school, the rest (90 percent) you learn when you are on the floor through experience.

Thanks again. :)

You are very wise for such a young one. I know you will do fine. Just keep your eye on the prize and survive the rest. Just be warned, being a new grad can really suck too....but that will pass as well. It is ALL worth it, I promise!:lol2::lol2::lol2:

This is my first post on the forums, and I have enjoyed reading them.

Nursing is a kind, caring, compassionate profession.

Nursing School is cruel and unusual punishment.

It's something we all survive to be a NURSE.:p
