Post here and introduce yourself if you will be attending DSoN in the Fall of 08!!

Hi! My name is Amy and I will be starting the BSN program in Oct. I am from Southern California and will be moving to the Denver area with my boyfriend in Sept. I am definitely excited to meet new people and see a different part of the country. I think I would like to get into some type of cardiac or pediatric nursing but am still unsure. I would love to learn all about the area of Denver and the great spots for sightseeing, hiking, nightlife, etc.

I can't wait to meet y'all and am excited to be sharing this experience with you! :nurse:

I signed the enrollment agreement, but have not heard anything since.

and you won't freeze your ass off...well maybe a little since you two are from cali but denver isn't too bad, not as much snow as you might think. And the upside is, even when it snows it should be gone by the next day!!! Not to mention that the sun shines more days a year in CO than in FL!

My name is David I'm 23 years old from Long Beach, CA. I hope to be attending DSON this fall for the BSN program. I just got back from a 3 week vacation in Panama and I just read the emails about the May 23rd deadline.... hopefully my spot is still available.

Did you find out?

Hi Amy,

I am also going to be starting at DSON in Oct. Moving from the South Bay, Ca.. Did you find out any info about housing options? I just spoke to Jeff J. and he mentioned a couple places.. LoDo, Downtown, etc.. you might want to give him a ring and ask for some more recommendations.

Hi Rasika,

We are looking at places in Aurora right now. I would like to be able to take the light rail to school, and I know there are stops available in Aurora to do this. LoDo is great but a little too pricey right now since I won't be working. Where have you looked? We are visiting July 17th and hope to sign a lease somewhere at that time.

I'm still on the waitlist to attend in Oct which kind of sucks b/c they added 2 pre-reqs for people beginning the January class.

I lived in Denver until a couple years ago. I'm currently residing in northern Japan, but I'll be returning in mid-September. Hopefully I get off that waitlist. It went from 4-24 in the week it took for me to connect with the admissions counselor after sending in my paperwork to confirm my spot. Thank you, massive time difference.

I'm sorry you're on the waitlist but at least you only have to wait until Jan to be admitted! When I spoke with Jeff last he told me the Jan class has to take an entrance exam, not sure if it's the TEAS test or not?!

What are the other pre-reqs?

I was able to contest patho in the first quarter b/c I took it before and got a good grade. That saved me $2,000 and 8 hrs a week. Maybe you can do that while you're waiting too?

I don't know about an extra exam. I have a bachelor's already, so that might be the difference. I just know that in addition to the A&P, micro, and statistics courses, they're going to start requiring nutrition and human growth and development. At least it's not like some schools that have non-nursing pre-reqs like religion or government. One school required communication skills which I've actually taught at the community college level, yet apparently that wasn't good enough for the school because I didn't have a grade on my transcript!

Good idea about the patho. Anything that lightens my course load during ski season is a good thing :)

I'm a fellow californian (bay area) transplanted to denver for nursing school, although I'm at CU, not DSON. I just thought I'd drop in to offer some advice about housing and transportation from someone who has just had to figure it out.

- there are tons of apartments available, you should be able to find one pretty easily anywhere you want to live. I had good luck with craigslist and just driving around and looking for signs on buildings.

- if you want something cheaper than LoDo check out the congress park neighborhood. That's where I ended up getting a place and I like the neighborhood a lot so far. If you look on a map, it's bounded by colfax, colorado, and york/josephine. The rents are pretty reasonable and there are lots of apartments and cute little houses. On colfax there are good restaurants, bars and cafes, the bluebird theater, and a branch of the tattered cover bookstore (there is also one in LoDo). 12th has neighborhood stuff like cafes and a hardware store. I can also ride my bike to cherry creek to get my peets coffee fix.

You can catch the 15, 15L, or 10 buses downtown, it's about a 15 or 20 minute ride. I live on the colorado blvd side, but if I was going to DSON I'd probably want to live farther west, close to josephine and york. The streets just east of josephine have tons of apartments.

-city park south and city park west also seem like nice areas. The 20 bus that goes down 17th and 18th goes to LoDo and most of the hospitals except denver health. 17th and 18th have restaurants, bars and coffee shops. There is also the cheesman park neighborhood just west of congress park and on the same bus routes.

-If you are looking in Aurora, make sure you talk to some locals about where you are looking. Some parts of Aurora are nice, some not so much. (Same with denver or any other city, of course)

- I don't know about the cold because I just moved here two months ago, but the summer is frickin hot by bay area standards. Maybe not quite as bad as sacramento or the central valley, but close. There are frequent thunderstorms in the forecast, but when it does rain it usually lasts about 15 minutes and then goes and dumps hail and thunder and lightning on someplace else. I got used to the heat pretty fast though.

- If you drive to denver from the bay area, take 70 through the rockies (very scenic) rather than staying on 80 to wyoming and then heading south (ugly). I'm sure that's obvious to most people, but google maps tries to tell you to stay on 80.

Thanks for this! We found a nice place in Aurora for a good price. Good luck to you.
