How do you deal w/ dementia patients? I find it hard to tolerate sometimes. I try not to take things personally, but i'm new to alot of this. The LTC floor i'll be working on, has a few dementia patients. How do you as an RN or LPN deal with clients with neurological disorders?
Thanking you in advance for any comments or advice.
Patience and a lotta TLC..when you work with enough of the mentally challenged you learn to 'read' them..what works with one, doesn't with another..just be yourself and be kind..easier said than done sometimes..lol..had this lady call me a "dumbass" the other night..couldn't help but giggle..we ended up BOTH laughing
What I have learned is never try to make them return to this world. You step into theirs. If a resident is looking for their kitty, I'll help look. Is a 90 y/o woman is waiting for her mom to pick her up I simply tell her "I'll keep my eyes open and when I see her I'll send her your way". I actually find working with demented patients as my creative outlet. As a rule, I don't have too many problems with the patients. Remember, diversion is your friend.
