i am a end of 2nd year nursing student and would like to know about the 18month midwifery program. i have heard that they pay you at D grade rates is this true?

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

Hi,

Yes they pay you at the salary you are recieving at the time you start your training, I believe if you are an F grade they will freeze the pay at top E.

I doubt if you would go straight from qualifying and into training so you would have a job before hand as a nurse? I advise get some med/sur experience before hand it will be a great help.

thanks i was thinking about getting some gynae experiance as my last placement was there and i really enjoyed it. but there is a girl on my course who is also wanting to do the same so we are going to try and do it together as we were both turned down for the 3 year midwifery degree program they already knew that we had places on the nursing course:o

Yes gynae would be good but a small amount of medical knowledge would help as around 30% pregnancy can be abnormal, and medical experience can give you an insite.

Remember that the mentality in this country is that you dont need to be a nurse to be a midwife, this is because we think of pregnancy as a normal.

I believe you do have to have nursing behind you because pregnancy can go from the normal to the abnormal very quickly. Also women with ongoing medical problems can and do become pregnant. :)

am amle nurse/midwife with certificate and currently registered and practising in Malawi, central africa. i would like to do a degree in nursing and currently am looking for the riight collegeGilbert

there are a lot of good universities which do nurse training both pre and post qualification, a lot would depend on where you want to/ afford to live and being a overseas student there will be a large fee to pay.

i have done a year and a half on a medical ward and a medical elderly ward and although i enjoy that i really took to gynae. i have always been fascinated by midwifery and gynae since before i started my training so i think that i will still do that

:)

thanks for your responce. But what about finding a job and raising money for school fees right in the UK. I would like so much to find a college in Manchester, Birmingham, Leicister and or Any good place.

Check out the NMC website and see what the requirements are for nursing in the UK and to whether your training fits the requirements. http://www.nmc-uk.org

another thought, I would think even if you looked at working in the UK you will still need a work permit, you will only be able to work for however sponsers your permit and may have a lot of ties which restrict your working. I would suggest you look at the nmc website and ensure that you meet criteria. I think you need to be a resident in the UK for ?2 yrs before there is any normal fees instead of international fees. check this link out http://www.nmc-uk.org/nmc/main/Overseas/Overseas02
