Deaconess Students

DCN only has 40 slots for the fall 20 must already have clinical sites setup. I don't know why this is. I was told this by Erin Kelly as I was filling out the application for the fall. So I just got on the ball and did everything I could to get everything in order before the deadline. Then I had to wait.

I am curious which 20? How would they decide something like this? Evens and odds or what? Something sounds rather strange about that.

Hi, Just a question I have. Do you have to be an LPN in order to attend Deacon College? I want to know more information on this program please. Thanks :)

There are two different programs depending on whether you apply as an LPN or not.

I believe (and things could have changed) LPN has 3 semesters to complete.

Non LPN has 6 semesters.

I would recommend calling the school to be sure.

Congrats on getting a Clinical Contract...That ROCKS...It is so encouraging to hear this program work for people...It gives me hope.
Sounds like you got your stuff together...Way to go!!!!
I will keep you up to date with how my "Preceptor Hunting" goes.

Unfortunately one of the two large hospital chains in Orlando FL has turned me down for preceptorship...They said that they want to reserve the few preceptors they have for local students....HELLO :uhoh3: ...I included in my coverletter that I have been an Orlando resident for over 21 years and I have been attending the local CC for 2 years.

That's alright, I am not discouraged that easily...I am planning to approach the #2 hospital chain this week...and we'll see how it goes.

BTW Soyung Hung, clinical liason for DCN, informed me that if I have no luck with hospitals in my area, to look into an OB/GYN and PEDS practice for my first clinical semester. She also said that homehealth may also have opportunites for students as well.

I will keep you up on how it goes...

I know Deaconess is a subsidary of Tenet Health (a wholy owned chain). they own one of the hospitals here in Indiana and many others around the country. They would be sure to give you a shot at completing your clinicals there as well. I start Deaconess in less than a month. I am so excited.

I contacted a Tenet facility which declined. Tenet hospitals are not obligated to take students from DCN. I offer this not to be negative but to encourage you to contact every possible facility. If you end up with two or more which are willing then you have your pick.

I was accepted for the Fall 2004 session without a clinical contract, but DCN did mention that half of the Fall class needs to have their clinical contract before classes start.
I am not sure why a hospital would be in a legal bind in accepted a clinical contract from a DCN student versus a contract with any student from another school. Both of the major hospitals here in Orlando precept community college nurses year round. I responded to an ad on http://www.campusRN.com from Florida Hospital advertising for nurse externs to complete their clinical training for college credit at their hospital. They only require a one week orientation to start. So I am hoping to hear something positive back this week...

Congratulations. Just a followup about the legal ramifications. If a student has a problem during clinical and a patient sues; someone must be responsible. If a local college has student nurses there, the school itself takes the responsibility including the student and the instructor unless the hospital is culpable in some way. The instructors are also there to tell students what they can and can not do and to troubleshoot. If a single student is there without an instructor, who then becomes responsible? Someone must be and my thoughts are that the hospital would be more responsible accepting the student without the backup of an instructor. I am sure that DCN does not take responsibility for all students no matter where they are doing their clinical. Just my 2 cents worth.

Actually as a current student I did ask this very question when I enrolled and I was told by the school students fall under the schools liability and insurance. I am not sure of the wording of the contract between the school and the hospital but believe you me, there is no way ANY hospital in ANY state would take a risk that could wipe them out. Additionally, I can't believe the Missouri SBON would acredit a program that had such a legal black hole, do you?
